WASHINGTON - Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage plans his first visit to Iraq as part of a Middle East journey that also will take him to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, the State Department said Thursday.

Deputy spokesman Adam Ereli said Armitage will meet with Coalition Provisional Authority staff and representatives from Iraqi ministries and the Iraqi Governing Council.

He also will meet with State Department workers in the country, the largest concentration outside Washington.

Armitage wants to "get a personal view of how things are going in Iraq," Ereli said.
