Judge dismisses Sept 11 suit against New York City

NEW YORK, Jan 12 (Reuters) - A federal judge on Thursday dismissed the last remaining property damage claim against the City of New York related to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Six insurers sought repayment from the city for expenses arising from the collapse of a 47-story office building near the Twin Towers.

New York City is immune from liability under state law, U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled.

But he left in place a lawsuit against the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey -- owner of the World Trade Center site -- as well the property manager 7WTC, Citigroup (C.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and others.

The building in question -- 7 World Trade Center -- collapsed from the effects of the attacks that brought down the Twin Towers. The suit blames the fall in part on the large diesel fuel tanks on the premises that caused fires to grow out of control.

3. wonder what the implications would be if it could be shown . . .
conclusively that WTC 7 was "pulled", i.e. intentionally brought down by elements of the US government (possibly in collaboration with the elements of the NYC government) through controlled demolition . . . you'd think those insurance companies (and I'm no fan) would have one hell of a case against somebody . . .

4. City dismissed as defendant in 7 World Trade Center lawsuit
January 12, 2006, 7:50 PM

NEW YORK -- The city on Thursday was dismissed as a defendant in a lawsuit alleging that it was negligent in the collapse of one of the World Trade Center buildings on Sept. 11, 2001.

The case proceeds against the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the trade center complex, and others.

U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein noted that the city had created an emergency command center in the building, 7 World Trade Center, which collapsed seven hours after the nearby twin towers fell.

He dismissed the city as a defendant after concluding the design and installation of an emergency backup generator system in the command center "was a good faith effort undertaken by the city to facilitate civil defense."

<snip>

The lawsuit was brought by the Consolidated Edison Co. of New York and insurance companies, contending that the city had improperly designed and installed a fuel system for a backup electrical system to support its Office of Emergency Management on the Manhattan building's 23rd floor. It seeks unspecified damages.

As usual, no one will be held accountable for anything in regards to the 9-11 attack.

5. Has anyone figured out why they kept targeting the trade towers?
Was it because it was widely known that New York's command center was located in the towers? Was it the CIA offices?

6. Seems like a stupid place to house a Command Center
Edited on Fri Jan-13-06 06:16 AM by DoYouEverWonder
and agencies like the CIA and FBI considerijg the fact that the WTC had already been attacked before in 1993 before the Command Center was built and that they had intel that terrorists wanted to attack the buildings again because they were such a famous target.

7. Exactly.
Like they waved a red cape and said, "Come and get me."

Do you have any history behind who made the decision to put the command center in the WTC and when they did it?

8. I believe it was then mayor Guiliani who named it "The Bunker"
notwithstanding it being located on the 23rd floor of the building. The historical reference was not ironic in IMO. It cost an awful lot of money to construct if I properly remember.
