Guardian Angels get bumpy ride in Toronto

The Guardian Angels are hoping to return to Toronto, but they're not getting much encouragement from the city.

Curtis Sliwa, head of the civilian anti-crime group based in New York City, flew into Toronto Friday to try and establish a chapter in the city.

...

Chief Bill Blair noted the Angels had tried to establish themselves in Toronto before, but had not succeeded, and he wasn't interested in trying what didn't work 14 years ago. "If they have some new approaches, some new interventions, then certainly I'll listen," Blair said.

Mayor David Miller also refused to speak to Sliwa. He said he does not agree with their approach.

1. Good.
These right-wing vigilantes are nuts. Curtis Sliwa is their king.

2. well...........
He garned very little support then, and I'm hoping that he doesn't get much now. Folks don't seem to have the same attitude as Sliwa does to vigilante justice.

3. Greater Toronto Area has a population of 5 million
Sliwa was responding to dozens of e-mails from Torontonians concerned about crime.

4. I know.
I live in the downtown core, a few blocks from the Eaton's Centre.

5. You know what that means: on Monday, Curtis will be employing
soundbites of "Canadian bacon", etc. to express his sour grapes of not being embraced by the Toronto. If it weren't for his radio program with Ron Kuby, Curtis would not have access to the media to pontificate his brand of morality and opinion.

6. well, guess there's no law against wandering the streets in a dorky hat...
I'm having a hard time figuring out what exactly these people do. Are they a cult? Do they have guns?

It sounds as though they mostly just stand around and stare at people all day. Pretty sure we don't have them up here.
