Israel reconsiders decision to cut ties with Robertson after apology
<snip>

"Israel is reconsidering its decision to break off contacts with Pat Robertson over the construction of a Christian heritage park after the U.S. evangelist apologized for saying Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's massive stroke was divine retribution, a spokesman said Saturday.

Israel and Robertson had been close to finalizing a deal to build the multimillion dollar tourist attraction when the broadcaster said last week that Sharon had been punished by God for pulling Israel out of the Gaza Strip in September. The comments prompted Israel to call off talks with Robertson over the deal.

Robertson issued an apology, which Israel accepted on Friday.

"In light of the apology and his expression of sorrow over Sharon's health, we will reconsider our decision," said Ido Hartuv, a spokesman for Tourism Minister Abraham Hirchson.

Israel's relations with the evangelical Christian community remain strong, Hartuv said. "We really love them," he said."

5. So Robertson ultimately never has uncomfortable consequences
to his delusional, hate-spewing outbursts. Other people make the adjustments and things proceed in an unbroken line. He never loses position or power in his world. You'd have to say he gains power, as he proves he is above restraint, able to act like a complete ass, and no one will challenge him seriously.

8. He brings Israel a LOT of tourist dollars.
He & Falwell sponsor trips to Israel's holy sites, attended by the Rapture crowd. No wonder this theme park is actually being considered. I'm not a particularly religious person, but I think it's sacrilege & hope it either falls through or is sizzled by a lightning bolt.

15. I have been reading quite a bit about the Isreali alliance with the
religious right in light of this story.

It's telling I think.

The entire middle east morass is a function of religion I think. A pox on all of them.

30. There's a great book by Gershom Gorenberg on this topic:
Edited on Sun Jan-15-06 02:46 AM by Wordie
It's called End of Days - Fundamentalism and the Struggle for the Temple Mount

Fascinating but very scary too.

"Few American journalists understand evangelical theology well enough to explain the Christian Right, few Israeli journalists take messianic Zionism seriously enough to explain the right-wing settlers, and few of either investigate Islam as more than a caricature. Gershom Gorenberg has the intellectual depth and journalistic curiosity to do all three, and as a result, his warnings chill the bone."--The New Republic

Gershom Gorenberg is an associate editor and columnist for The Jerusalem Report, a regular contributor to The New Republic and an associate of the Center for Millennial Studies at Boston University. He lives in Jerusalem, where he has spent years covering the dangerous mix of religion and politics.

22. Did anybody else hear the quote from the Mike Malloy show?
I'm paraphrasing now.... "Every day, Israel ______________________when it allies itself with the Christian Right".

What was it? Makes a deal with the Devil?

Sells itself down the river?

Edited on Sat Jan-14-06 08:14 PM by PBass

Translation: we love their tourism dollars.

Plus the mututal respect between religious fundamentalists... kind of like how people in MInnesota are friendly to each other... you never know when you're going to need somebody's else's help to push your own car out of the snow...
