WATERVILLE -- The Maine Civil Liberties Union is urging Mainers to do everything in their power to help end United States practices of systematic torture of detainees.
Union information requests have revealed accounts written by FBI agents that describe "torture techniques" used by Defense Department officers at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base and at other locations around the world.
Shenna L. Bellows, executive director of the Maine Civil Liberties Union, said torture as a standard operating procedure throughout the intelligence community is a serious problem. Her organization is spearheading efforts to bring the practices to a halt, but private citizens can help as well, she said.
Mainers should contact Sens. Susan M. Collins and Olympia J. Snowe and urge them not to vote for the confirmation of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., Bellows said. Alito as a supreme court justice would tend to give the executive branch even more power, she said...
