Va. Gov. Goes for Historic Inauguration

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) -- For the first time since Thomas Jefferson became governor, Virginia was preparing horsedrawn carriages, Revolution-era cannons and fife-and-drum lines to celebrate the installation of a new chief executive at the state's Colonial Capitol.

Patrick Henry was sworn in here as the first governor of an independent Virginia here in 1776, and Jefferson followed in 1779, the year the government moved to Richmond to elude British capture.

Saturday morning, Timothy M. Kaine was following in their historic follow steps on his way to becoming the state's 70th governor.

Kaine succeeds Gov. Mark R. Warner, a fellow Democrat who leaves office with a record high job-approval rating to explore a 2008 presidential bid.

Virginia hasn't backed a Democrat for president in 40 years, and the new lieutenant governor and attorney general are both Republicans, but Warner's popularity helped Lt. Gov. Kaine defeat his Republican opponent, Jerry W. Kilgore....
