Ellsberg: Exposing Secrets May Save Lives
Ellsberg: Exposing Secrets May Save Lives

By LINDA DEUTSCH, AP Special Correspondent 9 minutes ago

PALM DESERT, Calif. - Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers 35 years ago, said Friday that whistleblowers shouldn‘t be afraid to reveal government secrets in an effort to save people‘s lives, even if it means going to jail.

"Don‘t do what I did," Ellsberg said. "Don‘t wait until the bombs are falling in Iran . Don‘t wait until people are dying. Go to the press and reveal."

"I wasted 22 months," he said, advising others planning to leak materials to "take your risks and go to prison if it means saving lives."

He compared the Pentagon Papers revelations to the recent New York Times disclosures that President Bush had authorized wiretapping the phone conversations of U.S. citizens without court authorization. He also noted that the Times has acknowledged holding that story for a year at the White House‘s request.

2. That's a very good point.
At what point will we have more casualities from the Iraq War, than we incurred on 9/11?

4. The 9/11 benchmark was long surpassed
One must count all the innocents in Iraq, not just American soldiers and Marines, if a comparison with 9/11 casualties is to be made.

5. Breaking laws to torture, preemptive strikes, and spying has gone to far.
Needless deaths of 2200 of our own and over 100,000 Iraqis is enough for anyone to question this insanity.

Daniel Ellsberg is right on!

8. I can understand why people don't come forward, they lose their jobs,
are ridiculed; called "conspiracy theorists", and I believe that people end up dead (David Kelly). Now BushCo is going after the whistleblowers in the wiretapping case. But, man, do I wish someone would come forward.
