U.S. officials do not dismiss military option for Iran
Jan 16, 2006, 17:41 GMT

Washington - Expressing growing alarm over the nuclear crisis in Iran, U.S. officials Monday kept open the option of military intervention if Iran does not cooperate with international demands.

The remarks came as high ranking diplomats from the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany began discussing in London a response to Iran's resumption last week of nuclear research.

The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany were expected to consider taking the issue of Iran's controversial nuclear programme to the Council.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in remarks en route to Liberia for the inauguration of President Ellen Johnson-Sirlief, insisted that Washington was on a diplomatic course.

But she sidestepped questions about remarks from U.S. Senator John McCain - a leading Republican and possible presidential candidate for 2008 - that war was not out of the question.

1. Is it "war" or "invasion" which is not out of the question?
