Gov. Bush leading business delegation to Ecuador, Peru

Associated PressTALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Gov. Jeb Bush will lead a delegation of Florida business and government officials to Ecuador and Peru on a mission to solidify business ties and promote free trade.

Bush also will use the trip, which starts Tuesday, to promote Miami as the future headquarters of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, the U.S.-backed proposal for a hemisphere-wide trading bloc that has stalled as a result of fierce resistance from some Latin American countries.

The governor, the younger brother of President Bush, has lead several trade missions to foreign countries, accompanying Florida business leaders in an effort to attract business to the state and to help Florida companies establish foreign markets and partnerships.

Among the items on the agenda for the Florida delegation this week is a scheduled meeting with Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo.

2. The Bush people are trying to hustle hard to beat the clock here.
Looks very possible they'll be dealing with a leftist President after the April election in Peru. Looks like they're trying to get some deals made they don't think will be accepted in a few months.

A growing number of Peruvians favour a nationalist former army officer as their next president, according to the latest opinion poll, setting the stage for a second round election in May.

Ollanta Humala, who is seen as close to Venezuela’s populist president Hugo Chávez and Bolivia’s president-elect Evo Morales, has surpassed conservative candidate Lourdes Flores for the first time in a poll.

Three months ahead of the April 9 election, Mr Humala is supported by 28 per cent of Peruvians, three points ahead of Ms Flores, according to a survey released at the weekend by polling company Apoyo.

In the past two months, Mr Humala has surged about 15 points into first place. Ms Flores had been ahead since about August.
