CNN: Reports: Iranian president asks end to CNN ban
Reports: Iranian president asks end to CNN ban
Translation error had led to reports of journalists' ouster
Monday, January 16, 2006

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has asked that a ban on CNN journalists in Iran be lifted and that the network be allowed to continue working in the country, according to a report by the official Iranian news agency IRNA early Tuesday.

The report said the president's chief of staff has made the request in a letter to the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.

Government television station IRINN is also reporting that late Monday night, the president's office called for the ministry to annul its decision banning CNN from working in Iran and asked that the network be allowed to continue working there as before.

IRNA reported Monday that the Iranian government banned CNN journalists from working in the country after a translation error broadcast by CNN mistakenly quoted Iran's president as saying his nation has the right to build nuclear weapons.

CNN was not informed directly by the Iranian government that it was banned from the country....

4. CNN is banned in my house.
Along with all corporate US media.

Bad enough living under Bushism; no need to hear the corporate laugh track, too.

5. Lol, yet more poor semantics
"Translation error had led to reports of journalists' ouster"

That implies that the journalists were never ousted, that instead there was a translation error that caused erroneous reports of an ouster.

8. Because the world watches CNN.
Especially CNN International, which is quite different from the CNN you know & hate.

What if the world--including the USA--were able to see what's going on in Iran? Yes, the religious conservatives have too much power in the government & the military soaks up money the Iranians might prefer to spend elsewhere. (Sound familiar?)

But people live there. Many of them are educated folks who do NOT hate the West. However, a US bombing and/or invasion would only strengthen the conservative elements.

Iran Lifts CNN Ban; Amanpour Criticized
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: January 17, 2006

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran lifted its ban on CNN on Tuesday, a day after the government barred the U.S. network from the country because of its mistranslation of nuclear comments by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, state television reported.

Ahmadinejad ordered the reversal ''due to the expression of an apology'' from CNN over the mistranslation, the state-run TV broadcast said.

Iran imposed the ban after CNN misquoted the president as speaking of developing ''nuclear weapons'' when he actually referred to ''nuclear technology.'' CNN admitted the mistake in a broadcast.

Hard-liners called the mistranslation a deliberate act to misrepresent Iran's position at a crucial moment in international negotiations. The move highlighted the continuing tension between Iran and the West over Tehran's nuclear program.

The Jomhuri-e-Eslami newspaper said Tuesday that CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour was a "CIA and Mossad agent with a bad record" who should be barred from Iran....

12. Staggering mistake, Shameful-
I cant believe segments about invading iran,Don't forget we sold them the largest inventory of shoulder heat seekers on record (190,000) during the iran-iraq conflict. So they don't want McDonald's,Wendy's,etc at every street corner.
