Fear and loathing on US's lawless "third border"
Fear and loathing on US's lawless "third border"
Tue Jan 17, 2006 12:33 PM ET

By Bernd Debusmann, Special Correspondent
TECUN UMAN, Guatemala (Reuters) - This dusty frontier town caters to smugglers and illegal migrants. It's a stone's throw from Mexico, across the brown waters of the Suchiate river. In a way, it is also the southernmost border of the United States.

"Make no mistake, this river is not an obstacle, none whatever, " said Father Ademar Barilli, a Catholic priest who runs the Casa del Migrante, a hostel for migrants.

"The obstacle is across the river. The Mexican government has turned all of Mexico into a frontier. They are working on behalf of the U.S.. They are hunting migrants."
(snip/...)

3. "hunting migrants"
Yeah, hunting them, killing them, robbing them, slaving them...

But the funny part is the noxious 'Israel' line that somehow the US's borders are not 'fixed' and could be anywhere, where security is floated:"In a way, it is also the southernmost border of the United States."

What way is that again?

When I read, 'third border' headline...I assumed Canada-Alaska is lawless again?(oh yeah the marijuana thing again).

Tell me I am wrong in assuming this?

4. McCain " the war on terror has no
borders". The implication here is that Bushco believes in one world without sovereign nations.

6. IMO it would be better if...
the US and Mexico just plain had an open border.

It would definately be easier to keep Mexico's southern border secure than our border with Mexico.
