White House calls Clinton's attack ``out of bounds''

WASHINGTON (AP) _ The White House charged Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was "out of bounds" when she said Monday that the Bush administration was "one of the worst" in U.S. history and compared the Republican House to "a plantation."

White House spokesman Scott McLellan was asked about sharp remarks from two nationally prominent Democrats, Clinton, D-N.Y., and former Vice President Al Gore.

Gore, in a separate Monday speech, called for an independent probe of the administration program that listened in _ without a warrant _ on Americans suspected of talking to terrorists overseas.

Asked about the criticism coming from the two high-profile Democrats on the same day, McClellan said, "Well, I think we know, one tends to like or enjoy grabbing headlines; the other one _ sounds like the political season may be starting early."

15. The reaction is part of the story about the speech perhaps.
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 03:40 PM by K-W
But a story unto itself?

And Im not sure that the white house saying 'critqueing us is out of line' belongs anywhere in a news story.

9. he said the same thing about the plantation comment also when asked:
Speaking at an event in Harlem honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., the senator said the GOP-controlled House of Representatives "has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about. It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard."

She also railed against the Bush administration, predicting it "will go down in history as one of the worst that has ever governed our country."

Republicans voiced outrage at both Clinton and Gore, but at the White House, McLellan had harsher language for Gore.

"If Al Gore is going to be the voice of the Democrats on national security matters, we welcome it," McClellan said in a swipe at the Democrat, who lost the 2000 election to Bush.

12. Gingrich Said Democrats Think They “Run The Plantation”
I posted this earlier also

http://www.thinkprogress.org/
FLASHBACK: Gingrich Said Democrats Think They “Run The Plantation”

Prodded by the right-wing, the media is already swarming around Sen. Hillary Clinton for saying the House of Representatives “has been run like a plantation…It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard.” MSNBC has already launched a poll: “Was Clinton’s ‘plantation’ comparison too harsh?”

How long before the media mentions that Newt Gingrich, just before becoming Speaker of the House, made the same comparison in 1994:

“I clearly fascinate them,” Gingrich said of the Democrats. “I’m much more intense, much more persistent, much more willing to take risks to get it done. Since they think it is their job to run the plantation, it shocks them that I’m actually willing to lead the slave rebellion.”

They didn't have to talk about Plame.

They didn't have to intervene in the Terry Schiavo thing.

And it is THE worst in American history! I expect this will either play out very badly or Repukes will be run out of town like in the early 20th century. This would be good because it kept Repukes out of majority power for dam near a century. Let's hope for a repeat.

26. This is too funny, as Mclellan is essentially agreeing with Hillary
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 05:39 PM by pschoeb
by stating this.

Her statement was
"has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about. It has been run in a way so that nobody with a contrary view has had a chance to present legislation, to make an argument, to be heard."

So she essentially is saying, no one can do anything without the Plantation owner calling it "out of bounds"

The White House is like a Plantation, not just because of this, but becasue the "owners" are deluded by their own concept of their grandeur and lazy idiots to boot.

33. The White House response is a classic republican tactic.
The republicans are not whining about Hillary's comment, they are very deliberately and effectively manipulating the media and the American people. If it were not for the republican overreaction to her comment, nearly all of today's political news coverage would have been negative for republicans, especially Bush. So republicans decided to change the news coverage.

Republicans often react frantically and loudly to seemingly minor comments by democrats whenever they fear that the public may be getting a glimpse of their malignant hearts and diseased souls. They do this by blasting the media with emails and tv appearances screaming their overreaction and faux outrage in order to get the media to change the subject from what otherwise would be the biggest political story of the day. Rove did this many times to Kerry during the last campaign.

35. Where was Bill when Trent Lott said "You can support the troops but not
the president."???????????????????

And why is nobody using that, amongst other anti-Bill-Clinton slurs, back at Bush regarding who is out of line and when?! Shit, if Lott said that quote today he'd probably be in Gitmo!

This is the latest example of Dems lying down for the rethugs yet again. Or is it too early to tell; no time for a proper response yet? The repugs were vile toward Mr. Clinton and most of it unjustified. Or responded to for that matter. But when the same vileness gets thrown at a repug, oh then cries of "Foul!!!!" come all over the place.

Anyone else tired of this double-standard?

Bill Clinton was genuine about working with the repubs. And apparently no good deed goes unpunished. What are we supposed to think?

Sometimes you have to show the namecaller that namecalling isn't nice by calling them names in return. Hillary obviously held nothing back, but if she doesn't respond to this "out of line!" nonsense then I will be surprised. She was with Bill when he got slurred to Hell and back over his 8 years, so she knows firsthand what went on. Therefore she has no choice BUT to respond to "you're out of line!" if she gives a damn about the Democratic party. And if she doesn't, she's only doing a massive disservice to us all. Pity Bill cheated on her, it might otherwise be easier for her to defend him.

And if the Dems don't respond to this bullploppy about being "out of line", don't bother looking for me at the polls. I'm beginning to understand why so many despise politics.
