National Democrats choose Ohio to reveal ethics reform plan
The article neglects to mention that it will be delivered on the Ohio capitol steps with legislators beside Governor Dean.

http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/news/state/13646838.htm

WASHINGTON - Democrats say the confluence of corruption scandals engulfing Ohio Republicans - a convicted governor, indicted big-money political fundraiser and implicated congressman - makes the state the perfect place to introduce national ethics reform.
Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean is to announce a coordinated party effort from Columbus on Wednesday, a few hours before Democratic congressional leaders reveal specific legislation proposals in Washington.
"Ohio is 'exhibit A' in the Republican culture of corruption," Democratic National Committee spokesman Damien LaVera said Tuesday. "All of the national model for the culture of corruption matches Ohio, it's just in a more concentrated form than other places."

2. Great picture of the capitol.
I think this is good. I heard a lot of people will be standing on the steps with him. It takes guts, but I like it.

Howard Dean, Ohio Democratic leaders to discuss ethics reform

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean will join Ohio House and Senate Democrats in launching a national campaign to demonstrate Democrats’ commitment to honest leadership on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. at the Ohio Statehouse.

The event will coincide with the unveiling of a package of reforms being introduced in Washington by the Democratic leadership in Congress. Democrats across America will stand united on Wednesday in shining a spotlight on the Republican culture of corruption and in highlighting efforts to restore honest leadership at all levels of government.

Dean, who is chairman of the Democratic National Committee, will be joined for a news conference outside Governor Bob Taft’s ceremonial Statehouse office by dozens of legislators and activists, including Ohio House Democratic Leader Chris Redfern, who is also chairman of the Ohio Democratic Party, House Democratic Leader-elect Joyce Beatty of Columbus and Senate Democratic Leader C.J. Prentiss of Cleveland.

Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 11:19 PM by madfloridian
This one in Ohio is a lead in to that event with Reid and Pelosi and others. It is already listed as being on C-Span, so not sure about this one being shown.

Contact info for C-Span.

16. Competing proposals for ethics reform
(AP) — Some competing proposals for ethics reform in Washington:

DEMOCRATS

• Full plan to be announced Wednesday; expected to ban lobbyists' gifts to lawmakers, including meals and tickets to sporting or entertainment events as well as travel, and double the current one-year cooling off period that former lawmakers or senior aides must observe before they are allowed to lobby without restriction.

REPUBLICANS

• House Speaker Dennis Hastert and House Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier propose legislation that would prevent lobbyists from footing the bill for lunches with members of Congress or arranging lavish "fact-finding" trips for them. Lawmakers-turned-lobbyists would be banned from the House gym and from access to the House floor, where they have been known to make deals in hopes of changing votes.

• Sen. John McCain wants to restrict gifts and travel arranged by lobbyists, extend the time between when a lawmaker leaves Congress and can accept a job as a lobbyist and require more detailed disclosure of lobbying activities. McCain also wants to address "earmarks," special projects sought by individual members, often with the encouragement of lobbyists, that are inserted in larger pieces of legislation.

• Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, candidate for House majority leader, backs the Hastert-Dreier plan and also wants to limit earmarks and end loopholes that exempt taxpayer-funded government lobbyists from congressional ethics rules...

17. Careful everyone who is going today - the roads are horrid!
Leave early, allow plenty of distance - Central Ohio Roads are a solid sheet of black ice right now (off the freeways anyway)ANYTHING off the freeways are a 10 MPH crawl, and still frightening (weird, some of the worst road conditions I have seen in years...even the ice storm in Dec2004 was not as bad driving) PARTICULARLY if you have to come in from the east side of town!
