MEXICO CITY, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Mexico's leftist presidential front runner holds a six-point lead over his nearest rival, a new poll showed on Wednesday, although July's election is turning into an ever-closer three-horse race.

Support for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, slipped to 37 percent from 39 percent and his two closest rivals both gained ground, the survey by daily newspaper Milenio showed.

Lopez Obrador had long held a double-digit lead in polls, but that started to shrink late last year after he stepped down as mayor of Mexico City and started a low-budget campaign tour of towns and villages.

Without the high-profile political post, he has lacked the media limelight from his daily news conferences and has spent much of the past few months pressing flesh in areas of Mexico where the PRD has traditionally been weak.

Go Obrador! :yourock:

1. This is amazing news....
DU:ers, look South of the Border for truly big things happening. South America is turning to the left. They are spearheaded by Hugo Chavez, and they are all moving towards solidarity with each other, and a burning desire to "oust the Gringo" from their countries.

This should make them sweat in Washington.....

2. Good luck to this man. Mexico could surely use a good leader,
rather than Bush's puppet, Vicente Fox, who nearly found a way to knock him out of the contest altogether. So glad it didn't work.
