UN observers withdraw from DRC after ambush
Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo - United Nations military observers withdrew from a remote area of eastern DRC after gunmen ambushed their patrol and stole their uniforms, communication equipment and cash, a United Nations spokesperson said on Thursday.

The Malaysian, Algerian, Tunisian and Cameroonian UN observers were waylaid on Thursday by at least 12 unidentified men wielding AK-47s in the Rutshuru region of the troubled North Kivu province, said Jacqueline Chenard, a spokesperson of the UN mission in the DRC.

The gunmen ordered the four military observers to strip off their uniforms and hand over UN communication equipment and global positioning systems, Chenard said by telephone from the provincial capital, Goma, 65km southwest of Rutshuru.
