Minority Leader Reid Apologizes to GOP
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday apologized to 33 Republican senators singled out for ethics criticism in a report from his office titled "Republican Abuse of Power."

"The document released by my office yesterday went too far and I want to convey to you my personal regrets," Reid said in a letter.

"I am writing to apologize for the tone of this document and the decision to single out individual senators for criticism in it."

Reid came under attack Wednesday over the report, which was issued by his staff on Senate letterhead, even as he and fellow Democrats released ethics overhaul proposals.

"Researching, compiling and distributing what amounts to nothing more than a campaign ad on the taxpayers dime raises serious ethical questions," said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, one of the lawmakers named.

this draws more attention to what he is apologizing for than it otherwise would have gotten.

Reid knows exactly what he is doing. He's a sly dog.

If Reid said, "The GOP eats live kittens on a Satanic altar," I'd back him up on it.

I'm sure that at sometime Bill Frist has done such a thing anyway.

Some people say.

13. Actually...
...they do it all the time. They throw bombs and then "apologize for anyone whose feelings might have been hurt because they were too sensitive". Of course, the MSM never pays any attention to THEIR apologies, just repeats the slander, even after retractions. But we all know the MSM will replay the Democratic apologies OVER and OVER again.

We begin to stand up to these sick, vicious thugs and call them what they are--and then we look down at the floor, remove our spines and then we proceed to apologize to the most evil, corrupt bastards on the planet!!!

I don't fargin GET this!!!!!

Reid knows that his report is true and that the corruption goes way beyond what is in that report.

If anything, Reid should be apologizing to America for the report not being more comprehensive!!!!!

I can't stand this any longer!!!

We take one step forward, and then we slink back several miles.

DAMN!!!! These mafia thugs can only win with a bunch of lily-livered cowards apologizing every fifteen seconds!!!! DAMN!!!!!

15. Cornyn needs to STFU!
From 18 April 2005:

CREW Files Texas Public Information Request Regarding US Senator Cornyn's Involvement With Indian Gaming Scandal
Cornyn Claims to Have Never Met GOP Activist Ralph Reed

Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed Texas Public Information Act requests with both the Texas Office of the Attorney General and with the Texas Governor’s Office. CREW has asked the Attorney General’s Office for information regarding contacts between former Attorney General (now U.S. Senator) John Cornyn and Jack Abramoff, Michael Scanlon and Ralph Reed as well as for all documents related to the Tigua Tribe of El Paso, Texas. CREW also asked the Governor’s Office for information documents generated and received regarding the Tigua Tribe.

CREW filed its requests in response to a statement by Sen. John Cornyn that, while working to close down the Tigua’s Speaking Rock Casino, he never met with Ralph Reed, who had been paid by the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to close down the Tigua’s casino. E-mail correspondence between Jack Abramoff and Ralph Reed, however, suggest otherwise.

<snip>

Melanie Sloan, CREW’s executive director, stated “e-mail correspondence between Jack Abramoff and Ralph Reed shows that Senator Cornyn was clearly more involved with Ralph Reed than he is willing to admit. Thanks to Texas’ open records act, we will soon have proof that in his efforts to distance himself from Jack Abramoff and the unfolding scandal involving the Tigua, Senator Cornyn is lying. It will also be interesting to discover what role, if any, Governor Perry played in closing the casino.”

Cornyn is dumb as a box of rocks. He's in so deep with Reed, Scanlon and Abramoff that his only hope is to stop the investigation before it goes any deeper. He's been sucking up the $$$ since he was AG of TX, and NOW he wants to talk "ethics?" PLEASE!

He also never gets results

I can't think of a minority leader who's ever had a WORSE record than Harry Reid. Even Daschle mnaged to pull off a few victories. What's Harry Reid done besides talk.

43. Well, I did search Google, just as you asked!
You need to do it again and read some of those links! Sure they apologized, but NEVER for what YOU insinuated! Mehlman said he was sorry 90% of Blacks voted for Dems.

Here's the only apology I found that really WAS an apology, and as you'll see, it was TOO LATE!

Better late than never: NYT's Brooks apologized for misrepresenting Kerry
On November 13, New York Times columnist David Brooks issued a post-election correction for misrepresenting in his October 30 column remarks that Senator John Kerry made on the December 14, 2001, edition of CNN's Larry King Live. Brooks acknowledged what Media Matters for America noted on November 1: Kerry did not praise the Bush administration's decision to use Afghan warlords to try to capture Osama bin Laden at Tora Bora in December 2001.

From Brooks's November 13 New York Times column:

Not that it will do him much good at this point, but I owe John Kerry an apology. I recently mischaracterized some comments he made to Larry King in December 2001. I said he had embraced the decision to use Afghans to hunt down Al Qaeda at Tora Bora. He did not. I regret the error.

48. I hate that he had to do this, but I understand it
-and the frustration, also.

Whether it was a staff error to use his letterhead, or if there's some other explanation (the piece seems a little slanted), as minority leader he HAD to be concerned.

If a repub even puts a link to something that can be construed as 'political' on their govt website, we ALL recognize that as unethical.

I REALLY hate that he was in this position. But he dealt with it and I agree, it is a non-story.

This bunch of Dems with very few exceptions serve only as foils to provide us, the rabble, with the illusion of an opposition party. A party looking to make hay the past few years would have crushed this group of incompetents like the cockroaches they are.

If we can see through them & figure out how to counter their moves, why can't all these highly educated, the best, the brightest minds in the Country kick their butts back to whatever misbegotten hole they crawled out of?

Like Bernie Ward always says - It's better to ask forgiveness than permission. So Reid's office releases a scathing document and then Reid says "Oh, oopsie. My bad." But it's too late. The harsh words are out there and maybe sink in for some dimwits who still support the Repubes.

Reid has done this before. Remember when he called W a loser and then apologized? Some words never go away, even if you apologize. I think Reid knows this.

47. Can we, DU members come up with a Statement to send to Sen. Reid?
Can we maybe craft or cobble together a short response statement/message that we can get broad unanimity (or close to it?) post haste to send in response to our shared concerns about what is going on?

Can we can write something polite, with respect but to the point. It doesn't have to be a lengthy tomb or treatise, just something in 25 or 50 words (or longer if someone wants to do it) and fire it off tonight?

Cuz this is just insane, and we watched this kind of cha cha cha during the Kerry campaign just before the elections and it was really crazy making, and the media made hay out of every stupid public contretemps and it hurt us badly.

i'm open to other ideas, but we have to take some action here.. i can't just stand by watch these imbiciles constantly weaken our case like this.

Or DU could fly to Washington and lobby our leaders ourselves. That's actually not a bad idea. Ive thought for sometime we should mobilize the good constructive energy here and use it for other productive means.

Maybe the real story behind the illegal use of wiretaps and NSA tactics is its use on dissident Congress members. If there was some unpoken "gentleman's agreement" about using the power of the president to extract backmail info on the opposition party what more likely administration to flaunt it? Few people in Foggy Bottom have no embarrassing secrets to hide.

53. What's possibly naive here
...is to think that a member of congress (any member) feels more of an allegiance to his base of supporters than to his or her fellow members and the oligarchy in which they live and work. It's a club. And no one here is a member of it.

51. NEVER APOLOGIZE..
Edited on Thu Jan-19-06 07:32 PM by SoCalDem
:grr:..

You apologize for being late to a dinner
You apologize for forgetting a birthday

You do NOT apologize to a bully for being weak enough to believe you actually OWE the apology.

You do NOT apologize for telling what YOU believe to be the TRUTH.

You do NOT apologize to people who DEMONIZE you....EVER!!

You COULD say something like:

I am sorry they are too BLIND to see the error of their ways, and if they are offended by the truth, I am sorry they cannot comprehend it.

59. Well, this wimpy ass apology does not "rock" at all. It sucks.
If he "rocks" when speaking to the donor base on AAR, then he needs to "rock" when dealing with the Repubs too.

He should have said:

"I'll let you try to split hairs over this to the American people about how the people I listed are NOT corrupt. I stand by my statement."

What could have been a no-brainer & slam dunk turned into a major wimp-out.

I hope this is a hoax.

57. well, well, Ken Mehlman gets ethics all of a sudden also.

......The 27-page report criticized Republican lawmakers over their ties to disgraced ex-lobbyist Jack Abramoff, questionable campaign contributions and other issues.

Meanwhile, the head of the Republican Party said GOP lawmakers who are guilty of wrongdoing should expect to be punished whatever their political affiliation.

"The public trust is more important than party," said Ken Mehlman, the Republican National Committee chairman. "Which is why the first solution to the problem is rooting out those who have done wrong, without regard to party or ideology."

Mehlman's comments were in a speech that he planned to deliver Friday to the annual winter meeting of the Republican National Committee. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the speech.

84. "This way" is only what one article reveals. He also said:
snip>
"As you know, I myself have been the subject of similar personal attacks from Republican outlets. I understand the unfair picture they can paint and the pain they can cause."

Mr. Reid has been harsh in his attacks this week on what he describes as a Republican culture of corruption exposed by Mr. Abramoff's recent guilty plea to bribery charges - even drawing comparisons between Republicans and organized crime.

78. Dems were lied into war. And they lost any power in 2004. So give
them a break. They are just starting to get wise. Don't judge them on how they don't have power. Cause that is the fault of patsy American voters.

Of course the GOP wants you to feel disgust. Dems cannot do their jobs properly. But in the last year - they have managed to punch through to the truth. Why Laura is the only WH staffer who anyone will believe.

Grow some freakin balls! When was the last time a Republican apologized for insulting you?

Fer cryin out loud, I wish Democrats would stop doing that! Apologizing makes you look guilty of something.

An excellent example is Abramoff. At some level, I can understand the press' confusion, what with Democrats falling all over themselves looking for a microphone to use to breathlessly announce that they're giving back donations. Giving back legitimate donations doesn't make you look good, it makes you look culpable. Every democrat which gave back tribal donations needs their ass kicked.
