Iraqi criticizes secrect US contacts with insurgents ("appeasement")
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Iraq's national security adviser complained bitterly in an interview published about secret US contacts with Iraqi insurgents, warning that the "policy of appeasement" would undermine security.

National Security Adviser Mowaffak Rubaie told the Washington Times that the contacts with so-called Iraqi "rejectionists" were being carried out behind the back of the Shiite-dominated government.

"I think the Americans are making a huge and fatal mistake in their policy of appeasement and they should not do this. They should leave the Iraqi government to deal with it," he was quoted as saying.

Asked about Rubaie's charges, a Pentagon spokesman would not comment directly on whether contacts were being pursued with Sunnis associated with the insurgency.

"It's my understanding that the coalition is involved in reaching out to influential community leaders across Iraq to address legitimate concerns of the people and to urge people to participate in a peaceful political process," said Bryan Whitman.

3. does Hitch know about this?
Oh, dear... Hitch's lovely little war isn't going so well, and now we hear that the Bush regime is quietly groping its way toward negotiations and appeasement.

Ha! Wish I could have seen Hitchens' face when he heard that. Perhaps we should all gather outside his office and have a gloat-in, or something.

7. Oh, it gets even worse.
Yesterday, there was an article in the U.K. Guardian, which said that "at this moment, the U.S. negotiators are sitting on their knees, begging the Shia leaders to help them get out of Iraq".

OMG...can you visualize that scenario? The Tough Guys in Washington....the John Wayne corn-pone drinking dudes With Principle.

Yeah, right.

6. I suspect that whenever you see these releases of "500 detainees"
You're seeing the results of a deal.

Dr. Germ and Mrs. Anthrax were released right after the Dec. 15 elections. Coincidence?

8. These people we propped into power sure do complain a lot
If these condescending remarks from individuals who would still be civilians if not for our involvement is not a good reason to pull out of Iraq now, nothing is.
