Rove Says Democrats Wrong on War on Terror

WASHINGTON - Embattled White House adviser Karl Rove vowed Friday to make the war on terrorism a central campaign issue in November and said Democratic senators looked "mean-spirited and small-minded" in questioning Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito .

President Bush ‘s top political lieutenant, making a rare public address while under investigation in the CIA leak case, joined Republican Party chairman Ken Mehlman in warning GOP leaders against falling prey to the corrupting nature of power.

"The GOP‘s progress during the last four decades is a stunning political achievement. But it is also a cautionary tale of what happens to a dominate party — in this case, the Democrat Party — when its thinking becomes ossified; when its energy begins to drain; when an entitlement mentality takes over; and when political power becomes an end in itself rather than a mean to achieve the common goal," Rove told Republican National Committee members ending a two-day meeting.

The admonition reflects growing concerns among senior Republicans that ethics scandals in the Republican-led Congress could hurt the party in November, even among staunch GOP voters who may begin to blame corruption for Congress‘ runaway spending habits.

23. the Democrats should point out that a "War" can't be fought against terror
Edited on Fri Jan-20-06 04:06 PM by QuestionAll
that terrorists are "criminals" NOT sovereign states, and need to be dealt with harshly, and with an international effort.

a "war" against "terror" only breeds MORE terrorists
the "war" that needs to be fought is against the conditions that breed terrorism.

the words "military-industrial complex" might even fit in there somehow.

29. So, this is "Genius" at work...
Advance no constructive ideas, lie and exaggerate repeatedly, spread fear and "terra", and accuse the other party of your own wrongdoings. Some of us have not forgotten that you are a lying traitor who faces possible indictment, Karl.

Yet the puking pundits still revere and refer to his "political genius". Doesn't a steady diet of Kool-Aid eventually rot you from the inside? I think it does, and has.

I personally think that "genius" should only be used to describe extraordinary brilliance that demonstrates something constructive and useful to all - not conniving and conspiring to deceive for personal or political gain or self-defense. The current idea of genius, if applied to Karl Rove, would place him somewhere right below Stalin and, yes, Hitler. I don't think of them as geniuses.

40. But shouldn't terra be fading as an issue?
Bush took unpredidented power after Sept 11th, even ordering illegal spying on citizens, okaying torture and, when our torture was not sufficient, outsourced torture. They got the Patiot Acts I and II, received full permission from the congress to attack anyone connected, they received a blank check for their efforts, and invaded 2 countries.

THEY'VE HAD 5 YEARS.

When should we expect results? If we give them another trillion and invade another country (this time likely starting WWIII) will we be safe then?

41. Actually they don't even have that. We let them pretend they do for some
reason.

Osama is still at large threatening American citizens - Bush said he was not concerned about the Al Qaida leader just 6 months after 911 and he's had 5 years to bring OBL to justice.

We should make them ~@%&* ASHAMED to mention 911.

Who was in office on that fateful day again?

Bush is incompetent, reactionary, and ineffective to say the least.

If they bring up terror - we need to bring up 911, OSAMA, KATRINA, IRAQ

It's time we put Bush on the defensive about 911 - dangit!

42. Just saw this on Reuters !
Rove tells Republicans to run on Bush's record
Fri Jan 20, 2006 5:00 PM ET

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - White House political adviser Karl Rove on Friday said Democratic critics of the Iraq war were wrong and Republicans should highlight the issue in November's congressional elections.

Most polls show majorities of Americans have lost confidence in President George W. Bush's handling of the war. But Rove, still under the threat of indictment in a CIA-leak probe, said Republicans should emphasize Bush's record on security, the economy and the courts during the November campaign.

"We need a commander in chief and a Congress who understand the nature of the threat and the gravity of the moment America finds itself in," Rove told a meeting of the Republican National Committee in a rare public appearance.

"President Bush and the Republican Party do. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for many Democrats," he said.

Rove, Bush's top political guru, also capitalized on the party's traditional advantage on national security issues to help Republicans sweep to victories in elections in 2002 and 2004, citing new dangers after the September 11 attacks.

57. Rove: Security will be focus of 2006 campaigns: Dems have pre-9/11 view
CNN: Rove: Security will be focus of 2006 campaigns
GOP strategist say Democrats have a 'pre-9/11' worldview
Friday, January 20, 2006

Embattled White House adviser Karl Rove vowed Friday to make the war on terrorism a central campaign issue in November and said Democratic senators looked "mean-spirited and small-minded" in questioning Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito.

"Republicans have a post-9/11 view of the world. And Democrats have a pre-9/11 view of the world," Rove told Republican activists. "That doesn't make them unpatriotic, not at all. But it does make them wrong -- deeply and profoundly and consistently wrong."...

***

In 2002, Rove caused a stir among Democrats when he told RNC members to make the war on terrorism an issue in the midterm elections. "We can go to the country on this issue because they trust the Republican Party to do a better job of protecting and strengthening America's military might and thereby protecting America," he said at the time.

Rove made the same case Friday, though his words were a bit more measured. Reading from a prepared text, the deputy White House chief of staff began with a call for election-year civility -- "Our opponents are our fellow citizens, not our enemies" -- and quickly turned to portraying Democrats as weak on defense.

"The United States faces a ruthless enemy -- and we need a commander-in-chief and a Congress who understand the nature of the threat and the gravity that American finds itself in," Rove said. "President Bush and the Republican Party do. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for many Democrats."...

Karl said this is what happens to a dominate party — in this case, the Democrat Party — when its thinking becomes ossified; when its energy begins to drain; when an entitlement mentality takes over; and when political power becomes an end in itself rather than a mean to achieve the common goal," Rove told Republican National Committee members ending a two-day meeting.

KKarl wants to bury us now!! That's the common goal........

horrible moment in time. I suspect if we survive this neocon assault, they will be ridden out of town on rails. Not to be seen again for another hundred years! Rove doesn't have one smart political bone in his body, plus he looks like a pig's haunches.

68. Once again the Republicans, in an attempt to describe Dems
inadvertently describe themselves. If this was a card game, gosh, they just revealed their hand. Too bad the Dems lack a killer instinct; since democracy itself is at risk, when will our leaders start acting like it really matters? Urgency is expected NOW! "when an entitlement mentality takes over; and when political power becomes an end in itself rather than a mean to achieve the common goal" use this against the Republicans, it's what they're doing. Now we'll see if democracy is worth keeping & what people will do to protect it.

Rove Lays Out Road Map for Republicans in Fall Elections

By ADAM NAGOURNEY
Published: January 21, 2006

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 - Karl Rove, the president's chief political adviser, gave nervous Republicans here a preview on Friday of the party's strategy to maintain its dominance in the fall elections, offering a searing attack on Democrats for their positions on terrorism, the administration's eavesdropping program and President Bush's effort to shape the federal judiciary.

Mr. Rove called for civility in politics in his speech to the Republican National Committee, and then for 26 minutes offered a lacerating attack on Democrats that other Republicans said was a road map for how the party would deal with a tough electoral environment as it battled to retain control of both houses of Congress.

In a speech that drew several bursts of strong applause, Mr. Rove criticized Democrats for their opposition to tax cuts and for what he called "mean-spirited" attacks on Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., Mr. Bush's Supreme Court nominee. And he left little doubt that in 2006 - as in both nationwide elections since the Sept. 11 attacks - he was intent on making national security the pre-eminent issue.

Mr. Rove's speeches early in election years have proved to be accurate predictors of what Republican candidates will say in the fall, and thus every seat in the ballroom at a downtown Washington hotel was filled Friday.

Rove Offers Republicans A Battle Plan For Elections

By Dan Balz
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, January 21, 2006; Page A01

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove offered a biting preview of the 2006 midterm elections yesterday, drawing sharp distinctions with the Democrats over the campaign against terrorism, tax cuts and judicial philosophy, and describing the opposition party as backward-looking and bereft of ideas.

"At the core, we are dealing with two parties that have fundamentally different views on national security," Rove said. "Republicans have a post-9/11 worldview and many Democrats have a pre-9/11 worldview. That doesn't make them unpatriotic -- not at all. But it does make them wrong -- deeply and profoundly and consistently wrong."

Rove spoke at the winter meeting of the Republican National Committee and, with RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman, provided a campaign blueprint for fighting the Democrats. They spoke at the beginning of an important election year in which Republicans are battling historical trends, public unrest over Iraq and a spreading corruption scandal that together threaten to reduce the GOP majorities in the House and the Senate and possibly shift control of one or both chambers to the Democrats.

At a time when Democrats have staked their hopes in large part on the issue of corruption, Rove and Mehlman showed that Republicans plan to contest the elections on themes that have helped expand their majorities under President Bush. They see national security and the vigorous prosecution of the campaign against terrorism at the heart of the GOP appeal to voters.

87. 02, 04 Had one element missing: Scandal!
He can repeat the tired old messages again, but this time I have a feeling 2006 will be defined by Republican scandals. This Abramoff thing is just getting started, Rove himself is not out of the water, and Delay has major troubles ahead. The more these scandals grow and get covered by the media the more the people will start to think something is wrong, even if they can't get their small brains around what that is exactly :)

and when that happens more will pull the levers for our side then the last few elections

93. Karl: When are you going to teach george about container-handling ports
and the associated terrorism risks? I'm sure this has been hard for you to face as it will be the sort of thing that once he understands it will clearly strike numbush as hard work and cause one of those tantrums. But if we were going to actually start thinking about a first step (would two be too many?) in the general direction of fighting terrorism that seems like a place to start.

Or how about our domestic nucular (sic) facilities? Sorry to bring up the idea of gw actually working up a sweat, but, oh well.

What about any repercussions for Pakistan for illegally sharing nucular technology with Iran?

When are we going to close down George's terrorist training facility in Iraq?

And, paraphrasing the great freewayblogger sign:
If you'd gone after Osama like you went after Bill Clinton he'd be dead now.

97. Hey, Karl Baby, About Terrorism....
Hey, Karl Baby, about Islamo-fascist terrorism--a few questions

Whose party failed to pass legislation to beef up domestic airline security prior to September 11th, 2001?

Whose administration failed to heed warnings that Osama bin Laden might attempt to hijack American passenger airliners and failed to take even the minimal sorts of remedies the Nixon administration took in the very early 1970s, such as putting sky marshals on selected flights and by forcing passengers to either place cutlery in checked luggage or have it confiscated?

Whose administration did invade Afghanistan but failed to smash the Taliban, instead withdrawing troops from there to invade Iraq?

Whose administration failed to kill or capture Osama bin Laden? Team Shrub have had longer to kill or capture bin laden than the Clinton administration did before bin Laden became a visible threat and has failed to bring the villain to ground.

Whose administration let Osama bin laden get away at Tora Bora?

Whose administration has allowed Iraq to turn into a terrorist playground?
