Bush Puts Mine Safety Back on Agenda
Yet, if we bring this up, we're 'playing politics.'

How are they NOT responsible for this?

"WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is reviewing safety equipment used in the nation's mines after previously scrapping similar initiatives started by the Clinton administration."

:snip:

"In withdrawing the items during its first term, the Bush administration cited changing priorities and resource concerns. Miners' advocates said the action stopped potentially important safety rules from coming about."

3. How about all the other safety concerns...

...like the building that collapsed in my nearby hometown this week, killing one of the demolition crew and maiming another?

Oh, but that didn't make national headlines, so it doesn't bother Bush that he's got a numnuts with almost zero safety creds running OSHA.

I highly reccommend this here blog, by the way:

4. HOLY Sh*T!
It only took two major accidents at the hands of his reduced funding for Mine Safety inspections. That's pretty impressive.

:sarcasm:

what a schmuck! Maybe he should have left things the way they were.

5. Give * a little credit.
It took 2 buildings crashing down to make him focus on terrorism, then 2 accidents to focus on safety. He's consistent.

I heard on the radio that the governor of West Virginia wanted the state to take action because of the federal inaction.

I'm glad this was in the first line:

--WASHINGTON - The Asshole administration is reviewing safety equipment used in the nation's mines after previously scrapping similar initiatives started by the Clinton administration.--

"I care about mine safety, that's why I scrapped the Clenis shit!"

Just about every safeguard and environmental protection put in place by President Clinton was dismantled.

And they won't accomplish anything.

13. Its not just that
GW dismantled EVERYTHING Uncle Bill accomplished throughout his entire 8 year administration in his first year in office. Environmental protection, balanced budget, debt reduction, social progress, workers rights, do I need to go on?

What a pr*ck!

12. Yahoo News keeps feeding us these gems
and the Democratic leadership continues to appear perplexed. How about correlating mining industry political contributions with recent changes in enforcement and funding of mining safety regs. Publicize with ads while this is a hot issue. It seems to work for the repugs.

18. He scapped what Clinton had started
- The Bush administration is reviewing safety equipment used in the nation's mines after previously scrapping similar initiatives started by the Clinton administration.

The agency that oversees coal mine safety is seeking public input on how to better supply miners and rescuers with equipment such as breathing apparatus and communications devices, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

In recent years, the Mine Safety and Health Administration pulled Clinton-era initiatives examining safety equipment and mine rescue operations off its regulatory agenda, a semiannual document that outlines what agencies are working on.

Key among the items withdrawn were those dealing with oxygen packs that miners carry and the ability of mine rescue teams do their jobs.

20. "Reviewing" is a world away from REQUIRING
This is one of the most hypocritical political strategies - when you don't want to do something about a problem, appoint a Presidential Commission to study or review the problem. Stack it with people who will, after wasting several years on hearings, produce a conclusory report that is dictated to them by the administration in advance.

24. shameful
just shameful. If they do anything it will be because they've been shamed into it.

Last week, NH Congressman Charles Bass had a town hall meeting in northern NH, where this was brought up. Bass agreed that there should be a federal investigation to examine why the owners of the Sago mine didn't pay fines, and weren't held accountable for violations - but then he asked, "and where was the union?"

It was my great pleasure to inform him that the Sago mine wasn't a union operation. What a putz.
