GOP Boss Urges Ney To Resign if Indicted (Ney Responds W/ Threat??)
Cincinnati Enquirer

GOP Boss urges Ney to resign if indicted

No charges filed against lawmaker yet in lobby case

WASHINGTON - Ohio Republican Chairman Bob Bennett said Thursday that he'd ask Rep. Bob Ney to resign from Congress if he were indicted on felony charges.

Bennett stressed that Ney, R-Heath, has not been charged with any crime and that the party backs him for re-election.

However, if the Justice Department investigation of former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff leads to a Ney indictment, that would change.

"If he's indicted for a felony, we would ask him to step aside intil the matter is cleared up," Bennett said in a phone interview with the Enquirer.

Ney, who was travelling in Ohio this week, called The Enquirer to repudiate Bennett's comments.

"No party boss tells my consituents what to do," Ney said. "They will decide this thing."

Asked if Ney planned to step down if Bennett urged him to do so, Ney said, "I would say if he asked me to step down that he'd better look in the mirror because glass houses break easily."

12. Looks like autumn is coming early this year ...
Bennett backed off Thursday, saying: "Rep. Ney has said he believes a fair and thorough investigation will help to clear his name, and I take him at his word. It's important to let that process play out and to get all the facts on the table."

Read as: "When I made my remarks earlier this week, I completely forgot that Rep. Ney knows where the skeletons are hidden in my own closet. It's important to let the process play out and make sure the facts never get put on the table."

15. Is that the Bob Bennett of 'do as I say, not what I do' gambling infamy?
If so, maybe the other Bob does know quite a bit about him. Maybe he wasn't JUST a gambler! He might be connected, eg (at the roots, aren't they all connected at the roots?) to the Suncruz deal-gone-wrong that Kidan, Abe's partner, got Ney to help him with, in terms of scaring his business associate, Gus Boulis. Boulis, not long after Ney's entry, criticisizing him, in the Congressional record, ended up blown away in a mafia hit.

Is it the same Bob Bennett recently hired by CNN? Are they placing their protection right in the media now, before all this explodes? Or is this someone else? If so, then forget the gambling and CNN references.

16. No, an entirely different fat head.

I just used the helpful "contact us" button to ask Bob what it is Ney has on him.

I'll let you know if he gets back to me on that.

21. *lol* ~ thanks, l wasn't sure.
Looking forward to his response. It's kind of fun now, watching them turning on each other. Soon, as each one makes a deal, they'll be so busy attacking each other, they won't have time to go after Democrats anymore. This is so fun! This time last year, I never thought it would be possible!

3. Ney knows Ohio is dirty and the election was stolen.
Bennett and the Ohio Repug Party paid for "The Texas Strike Force," which
hacked phones, pulled dirty tricks, and harassed voters ......
I hope Bob takes em down with him.

7. OHHHHHH! Feels like being back in grade school and seeing a
couple of juvenile delinquent brats starting squabble. Then the calls of "fight, fight" coming from the other kids standing around.

Hope they hurt each other severely as they come out swinging. (Ney & Bennet.)

10. AP via Yahoo: Ohio GOP Chair Backs Off Ney Criticism
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060120/ap_on_go_co/gop_ney

Ohio GOP chairman pledged full support Thursday for Rep. Bob Ney (news, bio, voting record), a day after he said the party would ask Ney to leave Congress if he were to be indicted for his alleged role in lobbyist Jack Abramoff's influence peddling scheme.

Bob Bennett, chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, told Fox News Channel on Wednesday: "If Bob Ney is indicted, that's a very serious charge. We would ask him to step down on that basis."

The statement came four days after Ney, R-Ohio, stepped down temporarily as chairman of an important House committee. He reacted indignantly to Bennett's statement Wednesday

Bennett backed off Thursday, saying: "Rep. Ney has said he believes a fair and thorough investigation will help to clear his name, and I take him at his word. It's important to let that process play out and to get all the facts on the table."

13. Resign from *Congress*? That's a new one.
They waffled on whether DeLay should have to resign the majority leadership if indicted. Is Ney seen as more disposable, or is this an acknowledgement of deepening and widening scandal?
