Florida Republicans rally around Katherine Harris

By BRENDAN FARRINGTON
AP Political Reporter
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.

If there was any remaining doubt that Florida's top Republican leaders weren't behind Katherine Harris's run for U.S. Senate, those leaders did their best Saturday to cast it aside.

Gov. Jeb Bush said he would campaign for Harris and encouraged a crowded room of Republican activists to do the same. At a separate rally following his speech, Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings gave strong praise to Harris and told her, "Go, run and win."

And supporters scoffed at the nay-sayers who think she can't win and the polls showing Harris far behind incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson.

"People say to me 'How can she win, she's 20 points behind in the polls?' and I say, 'Polls mean nothing at this point in the campaign,'" said Ed Rollins, who was President Reagan's political director. "The way she's going to win is the same way Jeb won (and) President Bush won. It's you Floridians who turn out and vote."

21. At this point, it's not too likely that the "Diebold Scam" will allow
the Democrats to have their votes counted.

Yeah--crooked politicians win by intimidation, scare tactics, and by voting early--and often.

As someone mentioned on a TV show I saw recently--Katherine Harris will get a lot of the "cemetery vote."

8. when will the dems inc start making evote fraud an issue?
a few titters and snickers here and there, but no national coordinated media savvy campaign to save american elections.

no rallying cry, "save american elections", asserting that the dems are the party of open and honest elections (and
by default, the repubs are NOT)

doh.

11. Fla. GOP Rallies Around Harris for Senate
Fla. GOP Rallies Around Harris for Senate
Sunday January 22, 2006 3:33 AM
By BRENDAN FARRINGTON
Associated Press Writer

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - If there was any remaining doubt that Florida's top Republican leaders weren't behind Katherine Harris's run for U.S. Senate, those leaders did their best Saturday to cast it aside.

At the state GOP's quarterly meeting, Gov. Jeb Bush said he would campaign for Harris and encouraged a crowded room of Republican activists to do the same. At a separate rally following his speech, Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings gave strong praise to Harris and told her ``Go, run and win.''

The campaign hasn't been easy for Harris since August when she announced her bid to challenge incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson. GOP leaders in Washington searched for another candidate, convinced that voters were polarized by her role as Florida's secretary of state in the 2000 presidential election recount and that she could not win.

Fundraising has also gone slower than she expected and she acknowledged Saturday that she gave her campaign $250,000 during the final quarter of last year. She said, however, that she raised more than $1 million in other cash contributions - double the amount she raised in her first quarter of fundraising.

24. reporters are ejected during the speech.

GOP leaders say a state function is private, so reporters are ejected during the speech.

By ADAM C. SMITH, Times Political Editor
Published January 22, 2006

LAKE BUENA VISTA - The Florida Republican Party on Saturday called security to eject reporters listening to Gov. Jeb Bush tout his party's accomplishments in Tallahassee.

The unusual scene - five hotel security staffers and a sheriff's deputy escorting reporters away from where they could hear the governor - occurred in the middle of a speech in which Bush exhorted party activists to spread the word of Republican successes in Florida.
