Mercado: The killings in Mexico

MY CABALEN from Mexico town are not shocked, but are wondering what is behind the mysterious killings of local leaders in their communities.

Many residents no longer wonder who were behind the "liquidation" of the well-known victims, earlier reported as belonging to or working for a leftist organization.

The explanation is there but is unspoken: there is a current war between insurgents and the government.

The war, of course, has been declared by both protagonists: Ka Roger has exhorted renewed activities by the rebels, on the one hand, and Army General Jovito Palparan has vowed to eliminate anti-government forces in his area, in a set deadline, through strategies of his choice on the other.

Identified as a terrorist organization by the US authorities, the CPP-NDF-NPA is thus their enemy. The Philippines, as a matter of unwritten policy, is subservient to the interests of the Americans.
