TheTyee: Canada Poised to Kill Kyoto

Canadians are poised to axe the Kyoto Accord, but seem unaware that's what they will be doing when they elect a Stephen Harper government today.

Less than two weeks before voting day, with a majority government in sight, Harper said he would abandon the CO2 emission limits of Kyoto.

It was good news for the fossil-fuel industry, but bad news for Canadians, most of whom steadfastly favour the accord.

The story should have received major media attention, but didn't. By the following day, it was dead. Inside the Harper war room, fossil-fuel industry lobbyists were high-fiving each other. If Harper had announced a pull-out from Kyoto in Calgary in December, the media might have played the story very differently and Harper might not be heading for a majority government.

3. Do you ever get the feeling that leaders of English speaking countries
plus Germany and France are in together to destroy the earth, own all its resources, and contain, use, dictate to the people of this planet? And that the U.S. agreed to take the lead and the blunt of hate? Possibly because an entire agenda is the brainchild of certain people who are mostly in the U.S.?

If this were all a Hollywood script - how would you comment on it?

7. Still, Harper may govern from the center...
go back in year and say, "see, I'm a moderate". Then he will get a majority and govern as a right wing kook just like Bush. It's all possible.

9. Yep, that is exactly the danger with a faux Con minority
They will be constrained from implementing much of their extremist agenda and may be able to continue to pretend to be 'centrist', not because they want to be but because they will have to be to try and keep power in a minority position.

10. That's true.
I won't diminish the danger. I think he might even call a snap election (if he gets a minority), and try to capitalize on the final Gomery Report.
