Officials to be interviewed by committee probing CIA prisons

Several European leaders, including from Romania, are expected to be summoned to testify in front of a European Parliament committee investigating claims that the U.S. top intelligence agency set up secret detention centers for suspected terrorists in various European countries.

According to members of the European Parliament on Friday, the recently created investigation committee will also summon American officials to answer questions about claims that the CIA set up secret prisons in former Soviet countries.

The allegations were voiced first in November last year, after a Washington Post report said it had information the Central Intelligence Agency used compounds in at least two former Soviet countries to interrogate suspect terrorists it flew over from the Middle East. The newspaper did not identify the countries it was referring to.

Later on, the Human Rights Watch reconfirmed the allegations, saying it had evidence such secret centers were set up in Romania and Poland. The group also alleged the suspects were often tortured in these centers ...
