Syrians oppose US but love KFC
Syrians oppose US but love KFC

Jan 23, 2006 — By Rasha Elass

DAMASCUS (Reuters) - The U.S. flag serves as a doormat to an office and nearby merchants announce "we boycott American goods," but some Syrians can't seem to keep away from American fast food at the new KFC fried chicken restaurant.

"I oppose American politics totally, but what does food have to do with it? Politics is one thing, and food is something totally different," Tareq Mashnouk, a 26-year-old fashion designer, told Reuters.

KFC opened its first outlet in Damascus this month, becoming Syria's first fully licensed American food franchise. It belongs to Kuwait Food Co. (Americana), which owns and operates KFC and other American food chains like Pizza Hut and TGI Fridays throughout the Middle East.

~snip~

"To be honest we were surprised they opened this American restaurant in the midst of our political situation," said Tareq Farzat, 25, adding that he liked his Chicken Burger Combo and would definitely return to KFC with his friend Kalam.

10. I think you're on to something.
Americans, Arabs, and Israelis all need to sit down at a giant buffet of KFC grub. Ain't no food coma like a KFC food coma.

We'd have peace in the middle east in no time. As long as there's enough drumsticks to go around.

25. Ohhh the Colonel!!!
There he is,....the Colonel....with his wee bitty eyes and his smug smile saying "oh buy my chicken, sucker". Everyone knows he puts a secret addictive chemical in it that makes you crave his chicken fortnightly.

Everyone knows he is a member of the Pentaverate. Along with the Pope, the Queen, The Rothschilds, and the Rockefellers.

Eat hearty, me mateys!

12. Tareq is a Twonk.
If he can't fathom how corporations influence politicians, let him eat a solid diet of KFC wings - supersized.

(last I recall, KFC donated 87% of its political kitty to the Republicans.)

18. It's rather more complicated than that.
There have been conflicting back-channels going to Assad, the Brotherhood, Hezb'Allah, and the Palestinians in Lebanon. Efforts to cut-off funding from the US to each have been very much an on-again-off-again affair, as have relations with Damascus and its intelligence services. By no means were we all buddies during the Clinton years.
