Pinochet wife held in fraud case

The wife of Chile's former military ruler Augusto Pinochet has been arrested on charges of tax evasion.

Lucia Hiriart was arrested with four of the couple's five children.

Their arrests are part of a wider probe into foreign bank accounts held by Gen Pinochet, who has already been charged with tax fraud.

The courts have stripped Gen Pinochet, 90, of his legal immunity in this case, as well as in a number of human rights cases stemming from his 1973-1990 rule.

1. By golly, it should "take," this time. They've had enough practice already.
IF it hadn't been for some formidable protection from their lawyers, these people would have been in prison a long time ago. They should not be allowed to slip away this time. From the article:
Investigating Judge Carlos Cerda ordered the arrest of Pinochet's wife and her four children on charges of filing "maliciously incomplete" tax declarations related to millions of dollars, judicial sources said.

An appeals court is due to decide whether or not to grant them bail later this week.

If found guilty, they all face prison sentences.

2. Riggs Bank - the bank for international criminals
Riggs Bank Hid Assets Of Pinochet, Report Says

Riggs Bank courted business from former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and helped him hide millions of dollars in assets from international prosecutors while he was under house arrest in Britain, according to a report by Senate investigators.

The report also says the top federal bank examiner in charge of supervising the District's largest bank kept details about Riggs's relationship with Pinochet out of the Riggs case file. That happened a few months before the examiner retired from the government and joined Riggs as a senior executive. The examiner, R. Ashley Lee, denied the allegations to Senate investigators.

The Senate report also said Lee recommended, while still working for the government, that the bank not be punished for failing to take steps designed to prevent money laundering.

The report, which includes the first account of Riggs's dealings with Pinochet, is the latest blow to an institution that once billed itself as "the most important bank in the most important city in the world." In May the bank agreed to pay $25 million in civil penalties for what federal regulators called "willful, systemic" violation of anti-money-laundering laws in its dealings with the embassies of Saudi Arabia and Equatorial Guinea. Several other federal investigations continue into the bank's activities, and Riggs has hired investment bankers to explore a sale of the company.

Pinochet, leaving the question, "What the heck is that thing he's carrying, f'r crissakes? A scepter?????"

It's time for the Pinochet tyrant saga to end. He needs to go to prison.

8. Pinochet's Wife, Children Indicted
SANTIAGO, Chile - Gen. Augusto Pinochet's wife and four grown children were indicted and ordered arrested Monday on charges of tax evasion related to the former dictator's multimillion-dollar accounts at overseas banks, according to a judge's resolution read on state television.

Judge Carlos Cerda also granted freedom on bail to Pinochet's wife, Lucia Hiriart and four of his five children — Lucia, Veronica, Jacqueline and Marco Antonio, a benefit that must be upheld by the Santiago Court of Appeals. The older son, also named Augusto, was not indicted.

The combined alleged tax evasion by the Pinochet family mentioned in the resolution amounts to $2.05 million.

Also indicted were a lawyer for Pinochet and a secretary for Pinochet and the wife of Marco Antonio, his younger son.

11. Now if only we could extradite Kissinger, but apparently...
neither Democrats nor Republicans care that the United States is harboring a major worldwide fugitive. Hell, he goes on TV too!
