Removal ends a family's nightmare

Though he won a jury's unanimous acquittal on terrorism charges, Sameeh Hammoudeh is being sent to Jordan with family.

Published January 23, 2006

TAMPA - After spending almost three years in prison because of terrorism charges, Sameeh Hammoudeh was acquitted after a six-month trial.

Eight weeks after that not guilty verdict, it appears he will finally be released from jail this week and reunited with his wife and children, as they begin a 33-hour journey to Amman, Jordan, to join family.

..cut..

After a jury acquitted him in a Tampa federal courtroom in December, Hammoudeh remained in jail awaiting deportation because Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said they did not agree with the jury's decision.

1. He's one of the lucky ones. There's no telling how many have just
disappeared off the face of the earth.

How many are being held in secret? How many have been tortured to death? How many are living the horror of constant torture at the hands of the "land of the free"? How many families have lost a loved one to bush's crusade against the Muslim world.

3. ICE, what a bunch of assholes.
From the same link:

"I don't understand," said Hammoudeh. "Even if you are acquitted, the government is like wild wolves picking at you - this in a country with people full of love and mercy," he said.

So...this guy is an academic with a family who has been here since 1992, he is raided by the gestapo three years ago and held in solitary confinement on bogus charges, found innocent when he finally gets his day in court, and now is to be deported because ICE doesn't agree with the verdict?

Also worth noting is that this case is not about Al Qaeda but about Palestine. He was accused (and acquitted) of sending funds to Islamic Jihad. Funny, that. We send billions to the Israeli terrorists every year...

6. In a word NO
Once he is found not guilty by a jury of his peers he is free period. What they did amounts to kidnapping which is a Capital Crime.....They do not have any right to arbitrarily disagree with a jury's verdict and act upon that disagreement. If we lived in the real America this would never have happened and if it did there would be charges filed against those who held him. But we no longer live in an America with Law and Order. We live in country gone insane....

That is just horrifying.

Is Immigration and Customs now part of HS?

I bet they haven't released him because they don't want a 60 Minutes story done about him.

What is the difference between being "deported" and being "removed"?
