Ohio, Indiana Consider Complete Abortion Bans

Ohio, Indiana Consider Complete Abortion Bans

A measure to ban abortion has been introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives dominated by Republicans, just one of the increasing number of anti-choice measures moving through individual states. The measure proposed in Ohio could ban abortion throughout a pregnancy, and Ohio would join the 15 states that have already enacted such “trigger laws” that could go into effect were Roe v. Wade overturned. A similar bill is being proposed in Indiana, and anti-abortion lawmakers in both states see the legislation as a first step in mounting a challenge to Roe v. Wade.

Ohio and Indiana were among 19 states that received an “F” in terms of reproductive rights in a recent report from NARAL Pro-Choice America, ranking 39th and 35th respectively. The report also noted that the number of abortion restrictions passed in 2005 was double that of 2004, with 58 new restrictions going into effect across the nation. "It's a picking away at our freedom and privacy, legislature by legislature, law by law, with the ultimate goal of overturning Roe v. Wade," said NARAL president Nancy Keenan, according to the Associated Press.

Eleven states were given “A”s: Alaska, California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Montana, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Vermont and Washington.

2. Let me get this straight
Do these proposed bans on abortion include cases of rape, incest, and saving the life of the mother? How in the world can the legislators get away with that?

12. Have a child who has a lot of problems
physically and mentally. I wonder how many right to lifers have stepped up to the plate to adopt a child like this?

4. I don't think it'll happen yet
Even with Scalito, Kennedy will likely vote with the more intelligent members of the court regarding any outright ban. I'm much more worried about slowly restricting access, one little bit at a time. We really need to win the presidency in 2008. If another repuke gets in I'm sure Roe will be overturned.

If it ever does happen I really feel sorry for the women that live in the regressive States in this country. Unless they can afford to travel to a more enlightened place they'll be stuck with the black market of abortions and it's right back to the 50's.

9. Every man should get permission before having sex.
That way the sex police can ensure no unwanted pregnancies occur. Forms would have to be filled out, the woman would have to swear that should a pregnancy happen the partner is not held responsible unless both agree they want a child. After satisfying the sex police a date for the actual sex act will be then be set.

5. Okay. What the "H-E-double Hockey-sticks" is a "Trigger Law"
Is it named after Roy Rogers horse? Does it mean I can shoot my wife if she breaks her leg? Does it mean that a crazy, "nutso", fundie pedophile can shoot abortion doctors on-site?

These people make me sick. Most will weep and gnash their teeth over the "unborn", but will tell a starving, homeless, five-year-old whose parents were killed during Katrina to "pull yourself up by your bootstraps".

I guess it's true. If men were the ones to get pregnant, abortion would be not only be legal up to 9.5 months, it would also be "tax-deductable".

6. These seem like odd states to be considering this
Ohio is 23rd on the list of anti-choice states and Indiana is 10th.

52% of the residents in Ohio are pro-choice and 47% of the residents of Indianan. That's alot of constituents to be ignoring on an election year.

15. Doesn't seem odd to me
Both these states are noteworthy for their corruption, self-destructive political behavior and disregard for ethics.

16. Democracy Has Fallen In Ohio
They have nothing to fear from the voters in Ohio, they have been neutered, their votes disregarded.

If it wasn't obvious after the November 2004 (s)election, it certainly was after 2005, when 30% of the vote flipped to kill all the reform measures.

This is a gift to the only people whose votes still count in Ohio -- the religious reich.

10. It is to bring the abortion matter before the SCOTUS, that's all.
They know it will not stand as it is, but will have to be brought before the SCOTUS. They are considering this law to push the issue, rather than having it go through as is. I know, I know. Some people want abortions always prhibited, but the reason for these laws is to bring it up before the SCOTUS and over-rule Roe.
