Bush Hesitates to Give Take on 'Brokeback'
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060123/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_brokeback_mountain

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Asked his opinion of the movie "Brokeback Mountain," President Bush hemmed and hawed.

"You would love it. You should check it out," a man in the audience told Bush Monday during a question and answer session at Kansas State University.

After some hesitation — and laughter in the audience — Bush said, "I'd be glad to talk about ranching, but I haven't seen the movie." The audience laughed some more, and Bush, who owns a ranch in Texas, allowed that, "I've heard about it."

"Brokeback Mountain" is a cowboy romance about two ranch-hand buddies who conceal a long homosexual affair from their families. The movie has won four Golden Globe prizes, including best picture honors in the drama category.

As if he could really answer a question about it.

44. I wish they'd called him out on that
so all the ranchers could get a good laugh.
His knowledge of ranching consists of posing for photo opps. clearing brush.
That's it.

12. PHONY TO THE CORE: The "Ole Family Ranch"

Have you seen all those articles and pictures of Bush "at home on the ranch" in Crawford - the ones that imply that he is "just an ole ranch hand" more comfortable on the family homestead than in the "Big City," be it Austin or D.C.? Well, if you bought this image, you've been royally snuckered.

The Bush family homestead in Crawford is nothing more than an elaborate set. The house, built in 2000, was designed to be ready for Bush to step into - like a set awaiting an actor - during the 2000 presidential elections. Not only was the "ranch" created in 2000 - so, essentially, was the "town" of Crawford.

The whole idea behind the ranch set, of course, was so that the public could be treated to footage of Bush seeking a quiet "retreat" at the family ranch. Americans would thus assume that the ranch was a rooted family homestead or compound like the one Kennedy's had in Martha's Vineyard or FDR had at Campobello.

But when Bush retreated into his "homestead" in November, 2000, he was merely walking onto a prepared set upon which the paint had barely dried, let alone even the barest of roots put down. When we see photos of Bush bombing around the ranch in his leather jacket in his "ole pickup," supposedly knowing every tree and bush - it's all pure fantasy. If Bush knows every tree and bush after actually spending, all told, a total of about 2 months on the ranch (if you put the odd days end to end) since it was bought, then I''d like to know when he found time to hold all those endless Crawford press conferences! Seems to me he'd be way too busy introducing himself to trees and bushes.

Until Bush and handlers decided that a rural ranch would be a slick bit of PR for the presidential campaign, Bush had no interest in a "home on the range." Instead, his preferred weekend retreat was to the Rainbo Club, an exclusive lakeside hunting club in Henderson County, about an hour south of Dallas, much closer to the comforts of Austin.

They threw a fit, as I recall. I know there was a story on DU about the WH and their righteous indignation, walking out once they discovered it featured men who were in love (god forbid).

Seriously, the film is very powerful, and anyone who beleives in a contitutional amendment to ban gay marriage needs to see the film first. A very touching and revealing film about tolerance and understanding.

32. Larry McMurtry, who co-wrote the screenplay, is too
Bush is the head of a bunch of dumb sheep (dumber than the ones Ennis and Jack drove around the mountain). He has no thoughts of his own. Someone would have to explain the movie to him with a big picture book and flash cards.

34. I watched it and was both appalled and mystified
Appalled because obviously he was so un-nerved (and why would he be so un-nerved BTW?) that he couldn't even offer a reasonable remark and mystified that people appeared to think his comments were so deliberate and *funny*--he couldn't even string together something that sounded even remotely lucid as a response.

Why wouldn't the man just say "no, I haven't seen it...sorry" and let it go at that

That whole town hall thing by him yesterday was just bizarre--what is that man on?

38. CBS: "I hope you go back to the ranch and the farm"...
Bush, On 'Brokeback'

MANHATTAN, Kan., Jan. 24, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(CBS) President Bush loves life on his Texas ranch, but he wasn't quick to give his thoughts on "Brokeback Mountain," the movie about two gay ranchers who fall in love.

During an appearance at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan., Monday, the president was asked for his opinion by a student.

"You're a rancher, a lot of us here in Kansas are ranchers," the student said. "I just wanted to get your opinion. … (if) you had seen it yet. You would love it. You should check it out."

The question got a laugh from the audience, and Mr. Bush responded, "I haven't seen it. I'd be glad to talk about ranching, but I haven't seen the movie."

The audience laughed again.

"I've heard about it. I hope you go, ahh, you know…," then he paused, and chuckled along with the audience. "I hope you go back to the ranch and the farm, is what I was about to say."
