ALITO’S RECORD

January 24, 2006

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida today announced he would vote no on Judge Samuel Alito Jr.’s confirmation to the Supreme Court.

Alito, President Bush’s nominee to succeed retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, won a narrow 10-8 approval from the Senate Judiciary Committee earlier in the day. The full Senate is expected to vote later this week or early next week.

Nelson, who withheld an announcement until the judiciary panel had finished its hearings on Alito, disclosed his intention to vote no shortly after the committee’s final meeting. Said Nelson:

“I have voted for almost all of President Bush’s judicial nominees; and, I greeted Judge Alito’s nomination with an open mind. But his many legal writings, judicial opinions and evasive answers both at his hearing and in our private meeting, convinced me he would tilt the scales of justice in favor of big government over the average person.

“Because he is not the centrist voice I believe this nation needs to replace the retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who fiercely defended the rights and liberties of all Americans, I’m going to vote no on his confirmation.”

All told, during five-plus years in the Senate, Nelson has voted for 215, or 96 percent, of the president’s 225 judicial picks, including Miguel Estrada and Chief Justice John Roberts.

Chafee still undecided on Alito

By Andrew Miga, Associated Press Writer  |  January 12, 2006

WASHINGTON --Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a GOP swing vote in Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito's Senate confirmation fight, said Thursday he's still undecided about President Bush's high court pick.

Shortly after Alito concluded his final day of questioning by Senate Judiciary Committee members, Chafee said he plans to wait until the remainder of the confirmation hearings are over before deciding.

<snip>

The senator said he remains concerned about Alito's views on critical issues such as abortion rights, the separation of church and state and warrantless electronic wiretaps.

Chafee has split with national Republican leaders on some major issues. He is a member of the so-called "Gang of 14" moderates who helped avert a Senate showdown over judicial nominations last year. The bipartisan group is expected to be a critical voting bloc on Alito.

Snowe is also a good possibility to vote against. There was another that has been mentioned as well but escapes my mind at the moment.

On edit: Collins is the other Republican who has been mentioned as a possible no vote (thanks Jimbot).

7. The only way we'll get the average American to understand why Alito
is a terrible choice is to filibuster; such an action is to only way the MSM will allow the Democrats to hold the mic long enough to state our position on this pro-corporate, Anti-American extremist.

14. MSNBC article from a couple weeks ago stated:
With 55 seats in the Senate, Republicans hold the upper hand in their drive to confirm Alito. GOP strategists have said they remain concerned about no more than three members of their own party as they look ahead to a final confirmation vote in the Senate, Sens. Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island and Maine Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe.

Link: http://msnbc.msn.com/id/10741543/

Today, our local news is saying Snowe and Collins are both undecided.

18. Just out of curiosity
Which way do you feel the majority of Maine folks lean...pro-choice?....or no-choice?

I know Mainiacs are rugged individualists like the independent lobster men, but Maine does not strike me as a fundy no-choice state.

15. Their position on the fence is entirely for the media's consumption
They will both vote to confirm Alito, and to break any filibuster the Democrats attempt.

They will also probably both vote for the nucular option if needed. If they aren't needed, they will vote against the nucular option to maintain their moderate label.

11. My email to MY Senator
Sen. Nelson,

Thank you for your pledge to vote no on Alito's confirmation. You have just earned yourself a generous donation to your senate race. Please stand up and demand a fillibuster of this judge.

Thanks again.

12. Thanks, Bill. I will make sure to note that in my blog entry later.
Yes, I know Jeb is trying to strong-arm everyone into "voting" for Katherine Harris over another Republican and over you, but I WON'T LET HIM. JEB SUCKS. And if you can just keep your shit together for a few more months, he doesn't have to visit his suck upon you.

16. Dude, keep the word out.
As usual, they're going to try to pull something in your lovely state again. If I were you, among other things, I would try to get as much media attention on HOW FUCKING FAR BEHIND NELSON HARRIS STILL IS IN THE POLLS. In the end, the harder it is for the media to come up with a believable spin for her potential "victory," the more likely it is you can keep Senator Nelson. SERIOUSLY. Write letters to the editor. Whore yourself to television cameras screaming, "HARRIS SUCKS--NELSON IS OUT-POLLING HER!!!" As loud as you can. In teams of friends, if you can. And do you have a blog? If not, go find one. They're kinda handy. KEEP KATHERINE AWAY FROM THE SENATE.

24. Now we wait and see how Landrieu votes
She usually seems to vote with Bill, and with the republican party about 76% percent of the time. If Nelson is coming out against him I suspect she too will.

feigned to lose his memory? That's a very dishonorable action and makes him undeserving to be on the higest court in the land.
