Grassley says Alito vote could be slowed by Democrats

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito got a thumbs up from the Senate Judiciary Committee this morning Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says Alito's nomination is expected to go before the full Senate on Wednesday for debate with a vote possible on Thursday, though Grassley, a republican, doubts it will come that quickly.

Grassley says he'll vote "yes" to confirm Alito but he says Democrats may "slow walk" or delay a vote until next Tuesday. That would run it up against President Bush's State of the Union message, so, in Grassley's words "the good news of Alito's approval would be lost."

Grassley says Alito has shown "remarkable resilience" to repeated political attacks that have been thrown at him over the past few weeks of hearings. Grassley says "None of these accusations have stuck because he's a good man, having sterling credentials and an impeccable record of public service." Iowa's other U.S. Senator, Democrat Tom Harkin, says he'll vote against Alito. Harkin, who authored the Americans with Disabilities Act, fears Alito would help to overturn it.

1. "Political attacks" is that what they are calling "questioning" now?
from what I've seen those questions have been incredibly tame, considering what is at stake here.

2. "Political Attacks" is what they call...
questioning ANY of their plans. If we oppose them it's ALWAYS political.

Funny thing is, though, that they're right. Everything to do with the Senate, Congress, White House, etc. is political. Funny how politics tends to do that to governments, huh? :)

5. Ah! My senator speaks up and gives folks a reason
to make fun of Iowans. Thanks Chuckles. And thanks for that great medicare drug bill you ran through.

6. Well if we can't stop it, then I think we should slow it down and
prevent the President from claiming it as a victory in his SOTU speech which is coming up at the end of the month.

7. Senator Harkin is probably correct
Glad he's an Iowan. Sure wish Grassley was. Grassley is now a Washingtonian, as in Washington DC. He can stay there as far as I'm concerned, just so long as he isn't a Senator anymore. He shames this state which I am proud to live in.

8. Grassley - remember this comment from the hearings?
And the point's being made that maybe you did not remember a promise you had made to this committee -- well, let me assure you, don't lose any sleep over that. If senators kept every word they made to their constituents, there wouldn't be any senators left.
