Mexican Commission to Give Migrants Maps
Mexican Commission to Give Migrants Maps

By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer
Tue Jan 24, 6:27 PM ET

MEXICO CITY - A Mexican government commission said Tuesday it will distribute at least 70,000 maps
showing highways, rescue beacons and water tanks in the Arizona desert to curb the death toll among
illegal border crossers.

The National Human Rights Commission, a government-funded agency with independent powers, denied
the maps — similar to a comic-style guide booklet Mexico distributed last year — would encourage
illegal immigration.

Officials said the maps would help guide those in trouble find rescue beacons and areas with cell
phone reception. The maps will also show the distance a person can walk in the desert in a single day.

"We are not trying in any way to encourage or promote migration," said Mauricio Farah, one of
the commission's national inspectors. "The only thing we are trying to do is warn them of the risks
they face and where to get water, so they don't die."

1. The border crossing in Arizona is very dangerous
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 03:29 AM by XemaSab
I'm not in favor of illegal immigration, but I'd rather see an illegal immigrant than hear about a dead body found in the desert.

(on edit: or worse, FIND a dead body like one of my collegues did :scared: )

13. A sovereign country has its right to protect its borders
The fact that Mexico is ENCOURAGING this, instead of trying to help the poor of their country is disgusting. And no, I'm not xenophobic or racist for saying this. It's common sense!

2. Even though many of us disagree on immigration hopefully we can all...
... agree that this is a good idea and it will help prevent needless deaths.

with all of its corruption is almost fully to blame for people fleeing mexico to live a better life here in America and quite frankly that has to change.

Not from me if that is what you're trying to hint at I clearly stated the Mexican Government is at fault for people seeking a new life in America in masses.

7. Corruption did not begin with the current Mexican government
Look at Mexican history. And look at US influence on Mexico--counting several invasions. Do you think that Bush & Co have worked with Presidente Fox for the mutual benefit of both countries?

Yes, many Mexicans want change. But don't wish for an immediate, bloody revolution. A million Mexicans died in 1910-1920 Revolution/Civil War. And many more fled North.

The Mexicans will elect a new president this summer. Lopez Obrador, candidate for the PRD, has a chance. More info here:

The PRD's first candidate for president was Cuauhtemoc Cardenas. He was probably cheated out of the office in the dirty election of 1994.

9. I agree with you, but can you imagine the Mexican government
or for that matter any government, giving a happy rat's ass if the poor people from their country go off to work in another country where they'll most likely send money back to their family? Can you see any government trying to stop them?
