U.S. threatens India over backing for Iran nukes
Updated: 10:19 a.m. ET Jan. 25, 2006
NEW DELHI - A landmark nuclear deal between India and the United States will “die” in Washington if New Delhi supports Iran at the upcoming meeting of the U.N. atomic watchdog agency, the U.S. ambassador said Wednesday.

A week before the International Atomic Energy Agency meets to discuss Iran’s nuclear program, U.S. Ambassador David Mulford said that if India does not vote to refer Tehran to the U.N. Security Council, it would be “devastating” to the deal currently before the U.S. Congress...

US tried to cajole India to send troops to Iraq too, without any success. Will India succumb to US pressure this time?

22. So we are now taking on the biggest democracy in the world.
We will crush you. But first, can we outsource our security to you?

2. It all becomes so clear now.
The Chimpy giveth, and the Chimpy taketh away quickly. "Ur ether withus, or agin us."

Have you noticed, there is always some attachment to everything Smirky offers? If you are a lesser, you have to shut up about bombings, give up abortions, provide torture and/or secret prisons, or you get squat from him.

20. Bring back the cold war, I miss it.
Why didn't we go all ga ga when pakistan got nukes? Oh that's right, we needed them. So now we are going to piss off 1 billion people.
So let me see, we give nuke secrets to other countries but when other countries give away their own nuke secrets it's bad.

whew, I just wanted to get that clear.

3. Since many tax returns, mortgage apps and so on outsourced to India
along with all sorts of call centers, the US might think carefull about pissing them off. They might laugh their asses off while having thousands of workers hit the delete buttons on their keyboards. That'd fuck a lot of rich people.

18. Kinda doubt it. But Welcome to DU!
Some of my daughters friends are losing their jobs soon. The company president told them it wasn't about cheaper labor, it was that the folks in India were educated. At least half the people in the room have BAs or better- it's a call center for a US airline (one us taxpayers have bailed out more than once and they keep the same management policies and keep stiffing employees) frequent flier program.

Yeah, bush/Rice, let's get all hostile with the folks who know where we are flying and what all our credit card #s are, where we live and all the info on your financial transactions. :eyes:

America: Are you paying attention to all this?

7. Considering that India was one nation...
that used a peaceful nuclear energy program (Canadian built CANDU reactors) to produce nuclear arms, it's a tough one to call...

10. some parts of the Reuters piece worth looking at
India surprised its historic ally Iran in September by siding with the West when the IAEA declared Iran had failed to comply with its international obligations.

Its role at next week's IAEA meeting is being keenly watched.

"The position India will take on this issue at the IAEA will be based on India's own independent judgment," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We categorically reject any attempt to link this to the proposed India-U.S. agreement on civil nuclear energy cooperation."

The first sign of trouble with the deal came last week when after talks with Indian officials U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said there were "difficulties" in finalizing it but that he remained hopeful.

The two sides were hoping to finish the pact before Bush visits the subcontinent in March.

9. One would think they "know" about the "wigs" trick...
by experience...

Or they may cut some "new" deal with Putin, and give Helliburton like a long deserved "finger" (??)

Maybe the oil bourse's "worth it" more than the "other" bourse these days?

:nuke: :scared:

11. LOL!!!!!!
ChimpCo wants to sell spent fuel reprocessing and other dual-use nuclear technologies to a country that clearly used "civilian" nuclear technologies to produce nuclear weapons.

....at the same time it wants to punish Iran for its stated ambition of producing enriched uranium for its new nuclear power plants????

The hypocrisy is breath taking....

It just doesn't get more hypocritical than that.

It really doesn't.

We're dependent on India as a source of cheap labor.

What will we do, not "allow" them to accept anymore outsourced work?
