Ga. Lawmakers Approve Requiring Voter ID
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 03:05 PM by Marnieworld
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060125/ap_on_re_us/georgia_voter_id

edited to add excerpt:
"The legislation would require voters to have a driver's license, military ID or state-issued identification card with a photo. Social Security cards, birth certificates and utility bills would no longer be accepted.

Supporters said it would help fight voter fraud. Critics argued it would disenfranchise the poor, minorities or elderly — people who are less likely to have driver's licenses."

I thought that this was defeated and ruled as unconstitutional. I remember that Conyers argued against it as a poll tax and I recall it actually being a victory for the good guys. Is this just a recycled attempt? It's wrong and obviously an attempt to disenfranchise voters who vote democratic.

Yet another issue that a SCOTUS with Alito would rule against the little guy.

1. Good
Fighting voter fraud is a good thing. A fraudulently cast vote is just as disenfranchising as turning away a legitimate voter.

2. The problem is MOST Fraud is AFTER the Votes are Cast
It is rare in America to have people voting more than once. The main form of Voting Fraud in America has been miscounting votes, double counting votes, losing or adding votes NOT Double Voting.

Now I see the Georgia Legislature has ELIMINATED fees tied in with using the Picture ID, which would end one concern about this new law, but has it addressed the lack of places to OBTAIN such an ID in Atlanta (The problem was Atlanta only had one place to get a Photo ID which is to few in a modern urban County)?

3. They are going to set up at least one place
to get the ID in every county. But this is not actually funded, of course.

6. That's where all the fraud actually takes place,
in the absentee voting. This bill does not address that at all. In fact, they're making voting absentee easier yet.

7. Good point
And as much as anything else, this indicates to me that addressing fraud is not the point of this bill.
