Abramoff prosecutor among Bush nominees

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Wednesday nominated one of the Justice Department's lead prosecutors in the Jack Abramoff corruption probe to a U.S. District Court seat.

Noel Hillman, chief of the department's public integrity section, was nominated for the federal judgeship in New Jersey, where he served in the U.S. Attorney's office under Michael Chertoff, now secretary of Homeland Security.

The White House was poised to nominate Hillman last summer, after New Jersey's two Democratic senators took the opportunity to weigh in on Hillman and other nominees in exchange for lifting their objections to another candidate Bush had nominated in 2003.

White House press officials did not immediately comment on the timing of the nomination.

7. We are infected with this. If we can't beat it off at a local level, we
won't have any hope of shaming Republicans at the federal level from exhibiting such chicanery.

10. They aren't even bothering to hide it anymore
With a rubberstamp Congress and Scalito's appointment to the Supreme Court all but assured, why bother with pretense?

15. can someone explain why they find this so upsetting?
According to the article, two Democratic senators signed off on Hillman's judicial appointment. There doesn't seem to be any reason to suspect that Hillman's replacement, Andrew Lourie, will be any different.Andrew Lourie is the Managing Assistant United States Attorney in the West Palm Beach Office of the United States Attorney's Office. He is responsible for supervising the West Palm Beach branch office.

"In 1987, Mr. Lourie was a Litigation Associate for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, New York, New York. He began working for the United States Attorney's Office, District of New Jersey Assistant U.S. Attorney in July 1991. And in 1994 he entered the Economic Crimes Section, to become the Deputy Chief in 1998. In June 2000, Mr. Lourie became the Chief of Major Crimes Section. Prior to coming to the West Palm Beach office in 2002, Andrew Lourie was the Chief of the Public Integrity Section of the United States Department of Justice, Criminal Division in Washington, D.C."
