Sens. want independent corruption probe

WASHINGTON - Two Senate Democrats called Thursday for the appointment of a special counsel to take over the investigation of the corruption scandal spawned by lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The switch "would ensure that the investigation and prosecution will proceed without fear or favor and provide the public with full confidence that no one in this country is above the law," Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York and Ken Salazar of Colorado wrote Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

The two Democrats said that so far, the public integrity section of the Justice Department, which is in charge of the probe, has "pursued this case appropriately."

Abramoff pleaded guilty earlier this year to several felony charges, some of them involving his dealings with members of Congress and their aides. His one-time business partner, former congressional aide Michael Scanlon, pleaded guilty last year as part of the same investigation.

3. This means they'll write up a letter, and other senators will sign on.

Remember Kerry's letter of inquiry on the DSM? He started it and then it went round to other senators to sign on. In about a week, 9 other senators signed the letter.

At the time, Bush hadn't yet been weakened by Katrina and Plame indictments, and too many senators sat on their hands on DSM.

5. sorry to be cynical...but what makes anyone think this will go anywhere?
The Democratic Party has no unity, no spine, and no power. For the sake of the country, I hope I'm wrong.

6. Good for Schumer and Salazar
Yesterday the top prosecutor was promoted to Alito's old 3rd District seat. Schumer and Salazar must keep the integrity of the "Jack off" probe. Things should get interesting indeed.

8. yes but Salazar won't go for Filibuster! Doesn't he know he could talk
as long as he wants about Jackoff and the culture of corruption if there is a filibuster?

12. Dems Want Independent Corruption Probe
January 27, 2006, 3:09 AM EST

WASHINGTON -- Two Senate Democrats called Thursday for the appointment of a special counsel to take over investigation of the corruption scandal spawned by lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse said "there is no legal or ethical reason why the attorney general would need to recuse himself from this investigation as it continues to move forward successfully with a career prosecution team."
