Lieberman to join Dodd in opposing Alito's confirmation
Lieberman to join Dodd in opposing Alito's confirmation

January 26, 2006, 1:10 PM EST

WASHINGTON -- Connecticut Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman will vote against confirming Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito, a senior Lieberman aide said Thursday.

Aide Rob Sawicki said Lieberman would have no further comment until he takes the floor of the Senate, where the confirmation debate continued Thursday.

Lieberman, whose vocal pro-war support for President Bush has rankled fellow Democrats, joins Connecticut's other senator, Democrat Christopher Dodd, who said Tuesday that he will vote against Alito because his judicial philosophy is "outside the mainstream."

...Two Democratic senators, Tim Johnson of South Dakota and Ben Nelson of Nebraska, have said they will vote for Alito.

More than two dozen others _ including independent Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont _ have said they will vote against Alito.

But what does he think about a filibuster? Article doesn't say.

12. People don't realize, Sen. Lieberman is one of the best,
most solid liberals in congress.

I'm curious - do people think the Democratic party, or her politicians, must be monolithic or vote in lockstep?

26. I think I am voting for Lamont too.
I just can't pull the lever for JoeMo. I'm glad he is opposing Alito but that doesn't make up for some of the shit he has pulled.

3. If he has any desire to salvage his Dem credibility...
He would stand shoulder to shoulder with Kerry on the filibuster.

But then, this is Joementum we are talking about, ain't it?

4. WOW there is one redeaming quality for him at least
I'm shocked I tell you. What happened, did he get wind of some insider info that all the republicans are going down so he decided to jump sides? :sarcasm: (I guess it shows, I don't care much for Lieberman)

8. This is a bone being thrown to "his" base in CT.
Does he have any serious primary challengers? He is sure acting like it with token votes like this.

10. Joe opposes Alito now that it's safe to do so
Since there isn't going to be a filibuster, Joe has nothing to lose by opposing Alito.

Joe likes being a Democrat when it's politically safe for him.

Remember how long it took for him to vote "no" on Thomas? Not until he was damn sure his vote made no difference.

11. I know it's not popular to say...
But Joe votes with Democrats most of the time. He is very good on the environment and women's issues. It's just that on some things he is just out of his mind...

25. Good for you, Joe.
I'm a bit surprised but very happy. I'm sure some of the reason he is opposing is because of the slack he's getting about supporting some of Shrub's policies and it is an election year. None the less, I am pleased.
