Salazar Opposes Filibuster to Block Alito Confirmation

Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., said Wednesday he would not take part in a filibuster to block Appeals Court Judge Samuel Alito's confirmation and would support a cloture vote if others tried a filibuster.

Salazar is one of the "Gang of 14" - seven Democrats and seven Republicans who agreed to avoid a filibuster over Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts during his confirmation hearing last year.

In a conference call with reporters, Salazar said he still plans to vote against Alito's confirmation but indicated that his problems with the judge's philosophy do not extend to the extraordinary circumstances that would warrant a filibuster by the minority party.

Salazar was part of the bipartisan group of senators who combined to stifle a filibuster over Roberts and forestall the threat of a "nuclear option" by Republicans, a term coined by former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, to block debate and force a vote.

1. People that have contributed to his campaigns, CALL HIM NOW***
and tell him to not venture into your state and ask for more money until he shows the necessary leadership it takes to be a Senator.

2. Then he can abstain from voting on cloture.
Now is the time for us to punch the son of a bitch in the mouth,

We might not win this round but the fight is on.

6. If he votes to block a filibuster, he is politically dead.

4. Call Ken. Remind him *WHO* voted for him.
Use zip codes: 801xx, 802xx, 800xx and 810xx. I *didn't* even want him as my Senator. I wanted Mike Miles who would have supported the filibuster.

Ken would have made a better Governor.

5. What the hell is that all about?
Will vote a token "no" but won't take part in efforts to keep Alito off the court?

And Dems wonder why they lose.... pathetic.

14. WTF? I thought Filibusters were to be saved for someone really dangerous
like, ummm...Samuel Alito? We already gave them a pass on Roberts. We seem to have actually given more hell to Roberts than this POS. I don't get it. Where is their spine? We're gonna lose the midterms again at this rate.

7. Salazaar may be reacting to his constituents the same as Ben
Nelson has. Colorado and Nebraska are red states.

11. yeah but Colorado is MUCH bluer than Nebraska
Colorado leans slightly right while Nebraska leans strongly right. Salazar's got no real excuse other than the fact that he takes advice from the DLC. at least Nelson has an excuse that has some merits.

13. Colorado is mostly red until you get into Pitkin, Garwood and Eagle County
County. The voters in the high country tend to lean left (enviromentaly and socially) giving some reprieve from the voters in the plains and in Denver. Salazar is merely playing poker and hoping he bluffed in the right direction.

16. Denver county is not red. Neither is Boulder.
It's all the counties in the south, like Douglas and El Paso (Colorado Springs)and the flats toward Kansas that make CO red.

17. I was under the impression that Colorado was more libertarian
than liberal or conservative. It seems like the libertarians would be against Scalito.

15. Colorado is barely red.
and unlike that un-American theocracy known as "Nebraska", Colorado does NOT approve of George W. Bush.

Colorado voted 51% for Bush and 48% for Kerry. It's a swing state.

http://www.surveyusa.com/50State2005/50StatePOTUS1205ByState.htm

Colorado Bush 42% 55% -13%

Nebraska Bush 53% 44% 9%
