Bayh: $9M+ In His Campaign Account
Sen. Evan Bayh ended '05 with a whopping $9.5M in his Senate campaign account, according to reports Bayh will file with the FEC.

Campaign account money can be directly transferred into a presidential exploratory account; only a fraction of a Leadership PAC's cash is fungible.

In typical '08 hopeful fashion, Bayh is using his campaign account to accumulate a bankroll for a potential presidential race and is using his PAC to earn chits with Dems across the country.

Bayh's PAC contributed the maximum to NH Gov. John Lynch and NJ Gov. Jon Corzine. It gave $15k to the DSCC, 10K to the NH Dem party, money to the Blackhawk Co. Dem Party in IA and $25K to home-state Dems in Indiana's house. Sens. Bill Nelson and Robert Byrd recieved donations, as did candidates Harold Ford (TN) and Claire McCaskill (MO). House candidate Dave Loebsack recieved $1K from the PAC as did several others. Bayh also contributed to several IA legislative campaigns.

2. DINO
I have lived most of my life in Indiana. He's a likeable enough guy but just doesn't appear to stand for anything. He gets a lot of credit for reinvigorating the Dems in Indiana when he was governor, but since he's been a Senator I've been underwhelmed. He seems to go whichever the wind blows and is closely allied with the DLC.

I do not see him as presidential, either as a candidate or as the chief executive.

3. Excellent analysis.
I live in Indy and would not have been as gracious as you in my own assessment of Senator Bayh.

5. bayh's a good dem
I really don't get the open hostility Bayh gets from DU. He's not Lieberman. He was a great governor who did many progressive things. Yeah, he supported the IWR, but half the Dems in the Senate made the same judgement error. Is it his vanilla image? Is it that he reaches out to Repubs? He's the most popular politician in the entire state of Indiana, folks.

6. Bayh: Iraq invasion "noble," we're "morally superior," etc....
I've posted many times on DU what's bothered me most about Bayh. I will be very surprised if his politics resonate nationally with the Democratic base for 2008.

8. Part of that popularity is due to wife Susan and in some part the twins

12. Not to LGBT Hoosiers!
Indianapolis mayor Bart Peterson is sensitive and supportive of LGBT issues. Bayh is no different from rightwing House leader Brian Bosma on LGBT issues.

7. He hasn't done diddly for the Democratic Party in Indiana...
especially for the county parties.

Can't get thru to his aides in the district and takes forever to get a response. Compared to Lugar... Lugar does a better job with constituents.

10. Not in Indiana
He is nothing more than an empty suit whose biggest accomplishment has been in exploiting his family name, and his illustrious father, to advance his political ambitions.

9. Served Indiana and Democratic well
as Scty of State and Governor for two terms. Laid the
groundwork for successor's two terms and helped carry
House of Rep majority in state. He would serve this
nation well as chief executive although shortcoming is
no prior military service. There is one overriding
factor in his favor that he demonstrated with vigor
in Indiana. He is ELECTABLE.

11. He won't carry Indiana and...
he won't even get as many votes as Kerry did in '04.

13. That means I have to contribute to his opponents
every chance I get. And I'm not even his constituent.
