Pinochet daughter sent packing
Pinochet daughter sent packing
From correspondents in Santiago
January 28, 2006

THE eldest daughter of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet was set to return to South America, said a Government spokesman, after she dropped her request for political asylum in the US where she fled to avoid tax evasion charges.

Lucia Pinochet Hiriart, 64, was expected to fly today from Washington to Argentina, said spokesman Osvaldo Puccio. "We have information that Mrs. Pinchet will leave tonight on a flight for Buenos Aires," Puccio said.

Pinochet Hiriart was detained and denied entry Wednesday at Washington's Dulles airport upon arriving from Argentina. After 12 hours of questioning she requested political asylum.

Pinochet's eldest daughter was stopped after failing to respond to a summons from a Chilean judge to be formally charged with tax evasion linked to secret accounts kept by her father.

On Monday Chilean Judge Carlos Cerda pressed charges against Pinochet Hiriart for tax evasion to the tune of $US860,000 ($1.14 million) and the use of false passports.

Pinochet's daughter 'drops US asylum claim'

The daughter of former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet has dropped her request for asylum in the US, a government official says.

In Chile, a government spokesman said Lucia Pinochet was being flown to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The official said if the government allowed Pinochet to drop her request, she would probably be ordered out of the country.

Pinochet, 60, was detained on Wednesday when she arrived at Dulles International Airport, outside Washington, on a flight from Argentina. She requested asylum on the grounds that she feared arrest if returned to Chile. She faces tax evasion and other charges in her home country.

In Chile’s capital, Santiago, presidential spokesman Osvaldo Puccio said the US government had notified Chile that Pinochet was being flown to Buenos Aires on Friday night.

The decision was made by US officials, Puccio said. He said the Chilean government did not intervene because “this is a case in the police and judicial fields, and it should remain there”.

5. Stupendous! Whoever initiated that Senate investigation of the Riggs Bank
did Chile a real favor! From your article:
Pinochet Hiriart has been charged in Chile with tax fraud related to about $US1 million ($A1.3 million) in undeclared taxes and falsification of documents in a widening tax evasion and fraud investigation involving the Pinochet family.

The accounts came to light after a US Senate investigation of banking irregularities at the now-defunct Riggs Bank, based in Washington.
