Poll: 85% of Dems in Pennsylvania Favor Pro-Impeachment Candidates
By David Swanson
January 28, 2006

http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=5222

A new poll conducted in Pennsylvania (a battleground "purple" state) by Zogby International and commissioned by OpEdNews.com found that 84.9 percent of Democrats said they would be likely to vote for a congressional candidate who "supports having impeachment proceedings against President Bush." Only 7.0 percent said they were not likely to vote for such a candidate.

These questions were included in a poll asking about senatorial candidates in Pennsylvania. The complete results are available at www.opednews.com

The results were even stronger when people were asked "How likely would you be to vote for a candidate who supports a recommendation of impeachment against President Bush if he is found guilty of violating the law?" Among Democrats, 90.8 percent responded either "very likely" or "somewhat likely" (85.2 percent very likely).

2. This poll also finds Pennacchio 4 pts stronger against Santorum than Casey
snip>
When people find out about candidate positions on key issues, Casey plummets from a twelve point lead to a dead heat, with a non-significant two point lead.

Santorum loses when matched with any of the democratic candidates. Both of the self identified progressive democratic candidates draw higher percentages than Casey, with Pennacchio having the largest percentage of votes against Santorum, at a not quite significant 4.4 points higher than Casey. Casey, at non-significant levels, actually gets MORE votes from Republicans once they find out more about him and Santorum.

Casey refused to respond, so we constructed his positions from media and speeches.
OpEdNews.com's conclusion on this race-- Santorum wants Casey as his opponent because he wins the demographic game. Casey loses massively in some categories, when voters find out about Casey, which Santorum will sure insure. For example, Casy's support among 18-24 year olds drops from 63% to 40%, with Protestants, it drops from 47.3% to 30%, with liberals, from 95.4% to 68%, with moderates, from 64% to 53%, but Casey actually gains support from conservates, going from 3.9% to 5%, a non-significant, but interesting finding.

The poll first asked panelists how they would vote, matching up all five candidates (three Democratic, two Republican) without any information provided to them, then presented them with information on the position the candidates take on a number of issues. All candidates were invited at the same time to participate and given three days to respond. They were told that if they did not respond, then the issue positions would be constructed based on website, media and other statements the candidates made. All candidates responded except Bob Casey, jr., who replied that he would not participate in the poll. OpEdNews.com made one last request by phone and email after the deadline, offering the Casey campaign an opportunity to participate and they stated they were not participating. That same evening, Casey was also a no-show at debate sponsored by the league of women voters in Harrisburg PA.

3. Casey loses when people know his positions on the issues

So Casey only wins as long as Pennsylvanians remain ignorant. What kind of a candidate is that? Why is the party backing Casey and not backing Pennacchio, who could actually win this race? I don't think that the Republicans will hesitate for a moment to make sure that Pennsylvanians thoroughly understand Casey's positions on the issues.

4. According to that link Casey supports Alito.
That shocks me how similar Casey's and Santorum's views are.Is there a reason the PA Dems are backing such a moderate candidate?

8. Panic, I think.
It's very sad when our first, knee-jerk reaction is compromise. I suspect it was because the party bought the argument that we lost the last election because of "values." Apparently, the numbers show that this particular argument holds no water.

12. Exactly.
Casey was hand-picked by the PA Democratic party machine and shoved down our throats. We need to get rid of Santorum so I'll vote for whoever the Democratic candidate is in November. Pennacchio will be getting my vote in the primaries.

5. This is an important race, in an important State.
I hope more Pennsylvanians educate themselves on the candidates' views.

America is past ready for a change. Diebold hasn't gotten the message, unfortunately.

6. Thank for this. I participated in this poll and
it was good to see the results. I, too, had been supporting Casey until I saw the list of what each candidate stood for. I knew tht Casey was pro-life, but I didn't know that he was against stem-cell research and was "stay the course" on Iraq. Yep, another DLC'er. Rendell is, too.

Bob Casey, Jr. (Democrat)
On abortion – pro-lfe
On stem cell research – opposed
Accepts PAC money – yes
War in Iraq – supported
Troops in Iraq – stay the course
National Health Care – opposed
Raising the minimum wage – supports
NAFTA/CAFTA – opposed both
Alito confirmation to Supreme Court – supports confirmation

I will at least vote against Casey in the primaries.

and had no idea Casey's views were this conservative. Would sure like to see someone defeat Saintmoran, though.

11. Which is why Casey sucks as a candidate
he is a nice person to meet, but he is a really moderate DINO type democrat. Liberal only on social issues the Catholic church deems okay...but he has a shitty record on women's rights and reproductive rights.

don't get me wrong...I will vote against pRicky in November but I will have to hold my nose and probably vomit after voting for Casey if he wins the primary...

13. I participated in this poll as well.
Although I too was shocked to see Casey's positions on these issues, I may still vote for him if he is the strongest candidate to take out Santorum. A Republican in Democrat's clothing is better than Ricky-boy, IMO, who is not only a buddy of the Bush admin, but a crazy fundie freak to boot.
