Saddam walks out of trial in protest (MSNBC)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11082046/

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein's trial quickly fell into chaos after its resumption Sunday, as one co-defendant was dragged out of the courtroom, then a defense lawyer was ejected, and finally the former Iraqi leader himself was removed after shouting, "Down with the traitors!" and demanding to leave.

The new chief judge in the trial, Raouf Abdel-Rahman, had sought to show a tough control over the court, but the session -- the first in a month -- began to fall apart quickly. After about 15 minutes of the session was aired, the delayed transmission was cut off just before the shouting erupted.

By HAMZA HENDAWI
Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) Saddam Hussein's trial collapsed into chaos shortly after resuming Sunday, with one defendant dragged out of court and the defense team walking out in protest. The former Iraqi leader was then escorted out after he shouted ``down with traitors'' and refused his new court-appointed lawyers.

The new chief judge, Raouf Abdel-Rahman, pressed ahead with the proceedings even after the opening drama, hearing three prosecution witness, as he sought to assert tight control over the court.

4. Reuters: Saddam, defense team walk out of court in protest
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Saddam Hussein walked out of court on Sunday to protest the proceedings of his trial shortly after his defense team stormed out, a Reuters witness said.

Chaos erupted in the courtroom after the start of the trial of the former Iraqi leader and seven co-accused resumed with a new chief judge.

Saddam's former intelligence chief and co-accused, Barzan al-Tikriti, was ejected from the courtroom. He was led away by court guards after he refused to keep quiet and called the trial "a daughter of a whore."

Shortly after that Saddam and his defense team walked out to protest the proceedings.

11. My thoughts exactly.
It's hard to understand OUR court system, let alone the Iraqi court system, but I don't understand how someone can be allowed to keep disrupting his own trial.

12. Well what will they do? He's going to be executed anyway
so there's not much they can do - other than removing him which is what he wanted.

13. I don't blame him.
The whole damn thing gives Kangaroo courts a bad name. I'm ashamed that my country is the driving force behind this travesty.

He needs to be tried in the Hague, like Milosevic, but the Neo-Cons seem to think that their Iraqi puppets need to "Own" the trial themselves. "We are Democratic! We try our criminals OURSELVES!".

Yeah, just like Saddam did, right?

It's a travesty.

15. You need a special court to deal with war criminals like Saddam. They
eat up and destroy a normal court. Why isn't this monster at the ICC.

17. Oh for Petes sake.....
.....they ought to just let the guy go and let the Iraqi citizens handle him. This "trial" is a friggin joke since it's run by the U.S., and you know how well we handle things there. On the other hand, maybe Saddamm can get oil wells pumping and the water and electricity up and running.
