Four San Diego Marines charged in drowning death of instructor
Here's a new twist: a Drill Instructor dies instead of a recruit.

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Four Marines who helped supervise swimming instruction were charged in connection with the drowning of a drill instructor during training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot last August.
Staff Sgt. Andrew J. Gonzales, 30, was one of 12 students in a water survival course for instructors. He had just finished a rescue exercise when he became unresponsive and was pulled from the water.

6. Article doesn't say much.
...Following a preliminary investigation, Staff Sgt. David Roughan and Staff Sgt. Fernando Galvin were charged with manslaughter, negligent homicide and dereliction of duty, the Marine Corps announced Friday.

Capt. Vincent Guida and Staff Sgt. Duane Dishon were charged with dereliction of duty...

8. wonder what the water temp was....
There's a large body of First responder lit on temperature shock - more people die after being pulled out of water that is more than 20 degrees different than body temperature than actually die of drowning. It's fast, too - like 3 minutes. If you don't know what to look for, you miss it, the victim goes into shock, and you're looking for a lawyer. There's also a pressure shock issue - something about the water pressure putting an extra strain on the heart pumping blood into the extremities, and sudden removal from water causes something like the bends (this was not on my First Responder test...) I remember it being described like cutting the bottom off of a styrofoam cup with a razor - the blood just drops out of the thorax. If the water temp was low, or he'd been in the water a long time and pressure had equalized, they may not have realized he was in trouble until it was too late.

There's a reason we crawled out of the oceans and never went back.

10. I thought it was OK to let people drown people in military situations
Only if they're Iraqi? Oh, OK.
