Report: 5 punished for fishing instead of guarding nuke plant

ASSOCIATED PRESS

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 7 — Five Austin police officers have been disciplined for going fishing while they were supposed to be protecting a power plant against possible terrorism.

INTERNAL MEMOS obtained by the Austin American-Statesman indicate the officers were suspended last month for fishing while on duty at the Decker Creek Power Plant on Lake Walter E. Long. A lieutenant and a sergeant were among those suspended for from one to 30 days, the newspaper said.

The memos indicate that the fishing had gone on for a year without action, and that some of the officers ignored orders to stop their angling.

1. Ya but...
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 08:12 AM by sfg25
the article failed to mention whether or not the anglers caught any fish. Only now I read the article and they were successful.

Hey if that Mayberry guy can do it...

"Texas cops catch fish, not terrorists"

I wasn't aware that terrorists attacked the TX powerplant and were on the loose.

2. Fishing at a Nuclear Power Plant?
I heard they catch monster glow-in-the-dark three-eyed bass in those waters.

3. Here's my favorite part of the story, from another source
http://www.statesman.com/metrostate/content/metro/110703/1107fishcops_update.html

"The report said Lt. Michael Kimbro was demoted to detective for failing to report the fishing to Homeland Defense Cmdr. Joe Putnam because he feared being considered a "snitch."

(snip)

"According to the Oct. 22 memo by Chief of Police Stan Knee that was released Friday, prior discipline problems contributed to Kimbro's demotion.
In 1998, Kimbro had "an inappropriate sexual relationship with a sexual assault victim whose case he was assigned to investigate," the memo said.
It also said Kimbro had tampered with his time sheets to make the city pay for time he worked for part-time employers."

END QUOTE

In other words, sexual involvement with rape victims and stealing company hours wasn't grounds for demotion, but knowing that a couple of officers were fishing was?

Just a few years ago Austin had one of the best departments in the country, but their recent changes in leadership have led to sexual assualt and harrassment charges, a recent killing of an unarmed (black) motorist (who was driving a stolen car), and now (gasp) charges of fishing on duty.

Frankly, I've been to that lake and seen that powerplant-- fishing is probably as good a way to watch it as any.

8. I like the Texas story about this x-con
that became a police chief and had a whole mess of blacks arrested and put in prison for drugs. Senator Cornyn even helped to put 'em away before it was found to be a scam and had to free the men and put the police office in jail.

5. Good to know these terrorist fish have been brought to justice

Now the police can get back to protecting the community from dangerous rape victims.
