Bush Paints Democrats As Defeatist on Iraq
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060201/ap_on_go_pr_wh/state_of_union

WASHINGTON - President Bush, opening the fall campaign season, is painting Democrats as defeatist for criticizing his march to war in Iraq and protectionist for questioning new trade deals and tax-cut extensions.

Grumbling Democrats looking for advantage in Bush's weak poll numbers and burgeoning scandals in GOP congressional ranks refused to cede center stage as the president laid out his 2006 priorities Tuesday night in his fifth State of the Union address.

Encumbered by some of the lowest approval ratings of his presidency, Bush hoped to take charge of the agenda at the start of a year that will see races for most of Congress and 36 governorships.

Bush has been beset by criticism that his optimistic messages of recent years haven't squared with the worries many Americans feel over high energy and health care costs, the costly and deadly Iraq war and continuing terrorist threats. He acknowledged the anxieties of "a period of consequence," while still expressing confidence in the future.

1. Would love to see bush at a grocery store
self checkout counter - bet he would be as "amazed" as his father was at the earlier scanner (gee, now you can do it yourself... but why does it keep telling me to "put the item in the bag?") - because for certain, he is as out of touch with the reality of life for most Americans as was his father.

6. I wish we could point to something over in Middle East that works.
Since Bush came in. Northern tribes rule most of Afghanistan, Iraq is a mess, Egypt has sided with the Insurgents, Iran has gone even more to wards religious zealots. The Turks do not want us passing through their country and Saudi has moved most of our Army out and is cozy with China. Shall I go on? Good job Bush. More mess than the 65 years I lived before Bush starting fixing things. I am getting worried as I read he will be in NH this month and I live along the state line. Just landing on NH may produce a sink hole that will take Maine with it.:scared: :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

7. He will eat these words:

Bush has been beset by criticism that his optimistic messages of recent years haven't squared with the worries many Americans feel over high energy and health care costs, the costly and deadly Iraq war and continuing terrorist threats. He acknowledged the anxieties of "a period of consequence," while still expressing confidence in the future.

"Sometimes it can seem that history is turning a wide arc, toward an unknown shore," he told a joint session of Congress and a national prime-time television audience. "We will finish well."

As has become traditional, Bush was hoping to capitalize on the attention surrounding the year's biggest speech by delivering a recap Wednesday in Nashville, Tenn.

In Tuesday's speech, the president, hampered by big budget deficits, offered a modest program. He declared that America must break its long dependence on Mideast oil and rebuked critics of his stay-the-course strategy for the unpopular war in Iraq.

"America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world," Bush said.

Rejecting calls for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq, he said, "There is no peace in retreat." He also slapped at those who complain he took the country to war on the erroneous grounds that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction.

"Hindsight alone is not wisdom," Bush said. "And second-guessing is not a strategy."

13. Democrats ARE defeatist
Not because W says so, but because they follow sheepishly and cower too much.

Now, this does NOT apply to the brave folks who tried to filibuster Alito.

However, the party as a whole is good as dead.

16. Down the memory hole.
I wish someone would remind him that he himself said not too long ago that the war in Iraq was not winnable. So much of their bullshit could be countered by simply throwing their OWN words back in their faces: "George, you said the war was not winnable. Now shut the fuck up."

17. The Democrats didn't cause the dismal failure in Iraq
The Democrats tried to do what was right once the soldiers were sent over. The Democrats tried to get more soldiers over in Iraq. The Democrats tried to protect the soldiers with body armor.

19. i attended a panel discussion ( ann wright, scott ritter, et. al.)
scott ritter said he was at a conference w/ U.S. military officers where they brainstormed about the Iraq situation and came up with the same points that progressive Dems like ImpeachBush.org have come up with.

so the generals are 'defeatist' also?

bluster and swagger does not = 'winning'.
