Senators critique State of the Union speech

WASHINGTON Democrat John Kerry says President Bush missed an opportunity last night when he failed to challenge the American public to make sacrifices.

Appearing on N-B-C's "Today" show, the Massachusetts senator quibbled with Bush's comment that America is addicted to oil. Kerry says it's this administration that's addicted to oil. He said when the administration was given the chance to write an energy bill last year, it was the energy companies that did the writing. And Kerry says Bush's proposal for Social Security was a "terrible plan that even Republicans didn't embrace."

Democrat Joe Biden and Republican John McCain were on the C-B-S "Early Show." Senator Biden says he's disappointed Bush didn't "tell us the plan for Iraq." He says the president needs to spell out how he's going to secure U-S interests and "get our troops home."

Senator McCain complains the speech was light on specifics for overhauling health care.

1. Kerry "quibbled" - Biden "says" - McCain "complains"
Interesting how they editorialized against Kerry.

3. Do most people even know what quibbled means? At least he
is mentioned first and McCain is last. IMO, the media is still trying to present the idea that Kerry is still running against Bush. So it comes off like negative campaign rhetoric.

I don't think he quibbled. I think he wanted to point out that he was on top of this issue during his campaign and he offered a suggestion to Bush in that Bush needs to challenge all of us to conserve and push for alternatives. Good suggestion and better than Biden and McCain just asking for details and plans. They know Bush couldn't lay all that out in a speech. Sounds like they were the ones quibbling.

I would like to see Kerry mention new initiatives once in a while. Let his staff point out how correct he was on so many issues during the campaign. He has done some good work last year in the Senate and these things never see the light of day in his appearances.
I really like John Kerry, IMO, he wants so much to lead our country and put us back on the right track. I would vote for him again in a second. I just think it wouldn't hurt to be a little more positive and start to mentioning Bush's and Chaney's dealing and messes less and what he is doing now more.

5. just think of the difference in word choice
Instead of "blasted back at Bush," we get the weak-kneed, wobbly "quibbled"
Isn't quibble something you do when you're arguing about where to find the best bagel, not the direction of the world?
