Military Chief Warns of Rogue Missile Attacks
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&ncid=578&e=5&u=/nm/20031108/ts_nm/nato_myers_dc

<snip>The media was barred from the speech but in a recording obtained by Reuters, Myers presented the threat from cruise missiles and short-range ballistic missiles as a hole in U.S. and allied defenses that could be exploited by "non-state actors," which he did not further identify.

"You don't hear about the cruise missile threat, but if you think about it, cruise missiles, can be made to have very low radar cross sections, so they're hard to see," said Myers.

"They fly typically low to the ground, they fly relatively fast and they carry significant warheads, especially if you think about biological weapons or radiological weapons or even conventional weapons, for that matter, and they can be launched from almost anything -- from the back of trucks," Myers said.

"I only hope that people realize that this is a real threat. Short-range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, are prevalent in many countries," he said. "It won't be long before that threat is upon us."

1. so now we have the head of
the US Military warning NATO... that they will become
irrelevant... cute

Either you make yoru armies available to us, regardless of what
your peoples want, or you will be irrelevant.

This is after Central Europe (Poland) warned we were about to piss them off too... I wonder how long until Poland pulls their
trooops out

2. Hmmmm... I wonder who invented cruise missiles?
I wonder if that nation might be inventing other horrible weapons that will one day be used against us, like unmanned drones, bunker busters and daisy cutter bombs.

4. I don't trust Meyer's after his performance on 9/11.
Cruise missles? Please....if they are used, it will be a clandestine act by a national government not a bunch of terrorists operating in a cave. If OBL/AQ had them, any doubt that they would not have been used by now?

6. So...how many "non-state actors" have bought cruise missles?
and attached to them "significant warheads" including "biological, radiological and conventional weapons?"

None. BUT there is the POTENTIAL. This is more of the worst-case scenario as reality.

7. if you think about it
Isn't an airplane essentially a "long range" cruise missile?

It amazes me how these people are so incapable of understanding basic common sense. Terrorists tend to exploit weaknesses. No matter how many defenses we build, even if they all actually manage to work, people will find the weaknesses and attack that way. We can pour billions and billions into missile defense and whatever else, but all it takes is a few nuts with homemade bombs to cause some serious damage.

That's not to say we shouldn't try to defend ourselves at all, just that we need to get out of the box this idiot seems to be trapped in.

13. Our "star wars" missile defense cannot defend against cruise missiles
So we are spending a lot of money to deploy an as yet tested successfully system that is useless against the most credible threat we face.
