Nun killed in Brazil to receive posthumous degree
Associated Press
DAYTON, Ohio - A nun killed while working as a missionary in Brazil has been awarded the first honorary degree given posthumously by the University of Dayton.
Dorothy Stang's family and the archbishop of Cincinnati were to participate in a Mass and award ceremony in a campus chapel Thursday.
Stang, a naturalized Brazilian originally from Dayton, spent the last 23 years of her life trying to protect the Amazon rain forest and peasants from loggers and ranchers. The 73-year-old nun was shot and killed last Feb. 12 as she read aloud from her Bible.
Two Brazilian men were convicted in December of killing Stang. The gunman was sentenced to 27 years in prison, and his accomplice received 17 years.
Stang worked as a missionary in Brazil for nearly four decades and helped teach peasants living in primitive conditions sustainable farming techniques.
