CNN Breaking: 1st Ballot for Majority Ldr invalidated -- irregularities
More votes were cast than there were Republican members of the House -- irony at its best.

The 2nd attempt at the 1st vote leaves Boehner and Blunt as the only remaining candidates. 2nd vote is taking place now.

18. Breaking News from The Hill: Voting Irregularities, House Leader Election
Voting irregularities found in House leadership election

By Patrick O’Connor

House Republicans were forced to discard the results of their first ballot in the election for majority leader Thursday afternoon after members discovered an error in the number of ballots received compared to the number of members present in the room.

Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio) announced that she thinks those counting ballots forgot about Rep. Luis Fortuno (R-Puerto Rico) so there appeared to be a clerical error.

Republican leaders did not reveal the results of the initial vote, and members were forced to cast their ballots a second time.

(giuess there was no one he liked from NCarolina)

In Franklin County, Ohio, electronic voting machines gave Bush 3,893 extra votes in one precinct alone. "Franklin County's unofficial results gave Bush 4,258 votes to Democratic challenger John Kerry's 260 votes in Precinct 1B," according to this report. "Records show only 638 voters cast ballots in that precinct. Matthew Damschroder, director of the Franklin County Board of Elections, said Bush received 365 votes there. The other 13 voters who cast ballots either voted for other candidates or did not vote for president."

In Craven County, North Carolina, a software error on the electronic voting machines awarded Bush 11,283 extra votes. "The Elections Systems and Software equipment," according to this report, "had downloaded voting information from nine of the county's 26 precincts and as the absentee ballots were added, the precinct totals were added a second time. An override, like those occurring when one attempts to save a computer file that already exists, is supposed to prevent double counting, but did not function correctly."

FBI seizes ballots in close '04 legislative race

Casey Newton
The Arizona Republic

Feb. 1, 2006

Federal authorities seized ballots cast in a 2004 Republican primary on Wednesday, a move that could put to rest a long-running dispute over who won the race.

FBI agents met with staff members from the Maricopa County Treasurer's Office in the afternoon to take control over the ballots, which have been stored in a secure air-conditioned facility near Sky Harbor International Airport.

At issue is the outcome of the close race between John McComish and Anton Orlich. McComish prevailed after an automatic recount found nearly 500 new votes, reversing the initial outcome.

snip

Ever since, Orlich and his supporters have questioned how so many new votes appeared during the recount. After reviewing the voting machines used in the election, Douglas Jones, a University of Iowa computer scientist, said he could not rule out the possibility of fraud unless he examined the ballots to determine whether there had been tampering.

Not as much fun, but its the truth;

66. That doesn't make any sense.
If they forgot that he could vote, then, if he did vote, the number of votes would be correct.

If they forgot that he couldn't vote, then, if he did vote, there would be too many votes, but that's not what the report says.

Only way for him to be allowed to vote and for there to be too many votes, is if somebody stuffed the ballot box.

Am I missing something?

80. So if it was determined that PR's rep's vote was valid, why the do-over?
Did they just say, "Oops, someone screwed up, let's vote again" before figuring out what the problem was? That does sound like the GOP, rushing off without a plan and doing the same things over and over in the hopes that this time, maybe, it won't end in disaster...
