Rep. Bartlett Wins Support to Ban Abortion Pill
Rep. Bartlett Wins Support to Ban Abortion Pill
Thursday, February 02, 2006

WASHINGTON — Not only is the abortion pill RU-486 killing babies, Maryland Rep. Roscoe Bartlett said Wednesday, it's now known to kill their mothers and should be banned immediately.

Bartlett held a news conference Wednesday to boost passage of his legislation, commonly known as "Holly's Law," which calls for the Food and Drug Administration's suspension of RU-486.

"I don't want it on the market," the pro-life Republican said. "We need to be responsible. We need to move on this. This is a very modest bill."

The bill has 79 other co-sponsors, including Rep. Jean Schmidt, R-Ohio.

"Too many girls have been lured into the masquerade that this is a quick-and-easy fix," she said. "Let's give it a vote."

1. Isn't RU486 STILL not approved for sale in the US?
I could have missed something, but I though it was still only available in Europe.

19. more on the pill.....
Effectiveness And Safety

Since its approval in France in 1988, mifepristone has proven to be a safe, effective, acceptable option for women seeking abortion during the first several weeks of pregnancy.

* By the time the FDA approved mifepristone for use in the U.S., more than 600,000 women in Europe had medical abortions using the mifepristone regimen (FDA, 2000).

* Between 1994 and 1995, 2,121 women in Planned Parenthood and other U.S. health centers participated in clinical trials of mifepristone sponsored by the Population Council. In the two years following FDA approval, Planned Parenthood provided mifepristone to 48,000 women ("Amazing Year Two...", 2003).

* Complete abortion will occur in 96-97 percent of women receiving the mifepristone regimen. In the small percentage of cases in which medical abortions fail, vacuum aspiration is required to end the pregnancies (ACOG, 2001; Schaff, et al., 2000).

13. Ah Yes Jean Schmidt
The Honorable Jean Schmidt, speaking about the Honorable John Murtha’s resolution about the war in Iraq: Ms. Schmidt: Yesterday I stood at Arlington National Cemetery attending the funeral of a young marine in my district. He believed in what we were doing is the right thing and had the courage to lay his life on the line to do it. A few minutes ago I received a call from Colonel Danny Bop, Ohio Representative from the 88th district in the House of Representatives. He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run, Marines never do. Danny and the rest of America and the world want the assurance from this body - that we will see this through

29. they want a review of the drug--recall the FDA has taken years to review

the morning afer pill!!

.....The Bartlett/DeMint legislation will withdraw the approved application under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act for the drug commonly known as RU-486 and provides for a review by the Comptroller General of the United States of the process by which the Food and Drug Administration approved such a drug.

15. can't resist
Even the Russians knew Pravda was full of shit.

For anyone too young to have heard it ...

"Pravda" = truth
"Isvestia" = news

Whence the old Russian proverb:

There's no news in the Truth and no truth in the News
... or
There's no news in the News and no truth in the Truth
... depending on who's telling it.

I guess "dumb like a Fox" would be the closest thing in USAmerican English.

;)

16. Ban Child Birth!
yes, women still die in childbirth & of related complications, so lets ban that.

Oh, we could go on. Let's ban guns. OK, that's overdone. Cars. Also overdone.

OK - how many people have died from other medications, but it is RU 486 they want to ban. It is absoulutely diabolical that they now try to act like they care about women.

33. Sidney Wolfe got my son's life-sustaining medicine banned
for a lower fatality rate than that. :grr: :argh:

My son is dependent on Propulsid (cisapride) to eat due to severe gastroparesis and delayed gastric emptying, and Siddo orchestrated a smear campaign and got Propulsid yanked. Thank goodness we were able to get him into a clinical trial (that Wolfe tried and failed to get shut down!) so he could continue to get the medication.

IMHO, a few deaths are no reason to pull ANY drug from the market. There is no such thing as a zero-risk medication.

18. FDA info about 4 women who died of sepsis after taking RU486
Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 07:33 PM by SillyGoose
November 4, 2005 Update: This update provides additional information about the four women referred to in the July 19, 2005, alert (see below) who died of sepsis (a severe illness caused by infection of the bloodstream) following medical abortions in the United States. Since the July alert, FDA has learned that all four women were infected with the same type of bacteria. In addition, FDA has tested batches of Mifeprex and misoprostol and has not found any contamination with this type of bacteria.

FDA ALERT– FDA is aware of four women in the United States who died from sepsis (severe illness caused by infection of the bloodstream) after medical abortion with Mifeprex and misoprostol. Sepsis is a known risk related to any type of abortion. The symptoms in these cases were not the usual symptoms of sepsis. We do not know whether using Mifeprex or misoprostol caused these deaths. Patients should contact a healthcare professional right away if they have taken these medicines and develop stomach pain or discomfort, or have weakness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea with or without fever, more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol. These symptoms, even without a fever, may indicate sepsis. Make sure your healthcare practitioner knows you are undergoing a medical abortion.

Edited on Thu Feb-02-06 07:44 PM by 0rganism
...they probably wouldn't have died from this.

Pathetic.

Instead of going for the logical step to improve safety, i.e. a warning label and/or a mandatory briefing from the pharmacist, the GOP will use this to ban the drug outright in service of their fundamentalist base.

And it will work.

25. If the right wing doesn't stop using myths
and calling them science, they are going to bring this whole country down with them.

RU-486 does not kill mothers, and abortions do NOT cause breast cancer, depression and suicide. I cannot believe these wingnuts are actually pushing these ideas!! I grew up in the 60s and 70s, and even as a Catholic back then, people decided to keep their religion and their birth control decisions separate. Only the nuttiest really followed these rulings by the Church.

Now, not only is it the fundamentalists, it is the stricter Catholics too.
Sheesh.

35. Yes but
note the FDA did refuse to OK testosterone patches for women to help with libido issues post menopause or post surgical removal of ovaries. The statment that was publicly released was something like "clinical tests have shown no harmful effects but really we just can't be sure"

36. GOP House polls fell when they messed with Schiavo. They never learn.
The tiny bump they get from the base will be negated by the outrage voters at large will feel when they ask themselves "Why is Congress taking over the job of the FDA? Is this election year political posturing with my rights as a medical consumer?"
